Navy band to perform The United States Navy Band’s “Country Current,” the Navy’s premier country music ensemble, will perform a free concert for the community at The Classic Center, Athens, on Friday, Sept. 5, at 7:30 p.m. Under the direction of banjoist Chief Musician Keith M. Arneson, the seven-member specialty unit has performed for seven U.S. pres idents at the White House and other International functions and has shared the stage at the Grand Ole Opry, The Wheeling Jamboree and The Academy of Country Music Awards show with country music artists including Alison Kraus, Charlie Daniels, John Anderson and the Statler Brothers. Featuring traditional instrumen tation - acoustic bass, banjo, man dolin, acoustic guitar and fiddle - Country Current is in constant demand at bluegrass festivals across the nation. The Banks County Horse Judging Team placed eighth at the State 4-H Horse Judging Contest in Athens on May 3. Team members Shelby Quakenbush, Pearl Oppenhiemer, Moira Reed, Benjamin Harper, and Anna Blasingame faced 15 other teams. They judged four confirmation classes and four rid ing performance classes, accord ing to volunteer coach, Denise Reed. They also justified their placings on a number of classes judged by giving oral reasons. As a result of their participa tion in horse judging, these youth learned character traits includ ing responsibility and fairness. In addition, they practiced numer ous life skills including team work, contribution to group effort, self motivation, problem solving, critical thinking, decision making, goal setting, organizing, coopera tion and communication. Horsemanship Club to meet The Banks County 4-H Horsemanship Club will hold a round-up parent meeting for new members on Thursday, August 28, at 6 p.m. at the Banks County Extension / 4-H Office located at 413 Evans St., Homer. Horse club meetings will be held every Thursday at 6 p.m. at the Banks County Extension / 4-H office starting on Thursday September 4. Refreshments will be served. BES receives grant Banks County Elementary School has received a grant from children’s book publisher Sylvan Dell. The grant is for a free, one-year site license, providing unlimited access to all 35 Sylvan Dell eBooks, featuring flipviewer technology with selectable English and Spanish text and audio. The license can be used on all school computers and may be placed on secure school websites, enabling students and their families to log in and have access from their homes, according to a statement from the company. Banks County High School will once again offer a driv er’s education program dur ing the upcoming school year. BCHS is also the only system in the state to be awarded a grant for the second consecutive year by the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety for more than $150,000. The grant will allow the program to be expanded with an additional driver’s education teacher and classroom simulators. The interactive simulators will supplement traditional behind the wheel time. The simulators will allow students the oppor tunity to safely practice haz ardous driving conditions. Driver’s education is an elec tive course free of charge. School officials anticipate serv ing approximately 260 stu dents during the school year. “We are thrilled to receive this grant from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety,” said Banks County Superintendent Chris Erwin. “We are committed to meeting the needs of our children. We are continually surveying the needs of our community and seek ing grants based on these needs to help our students and our area.” Armour earns bachelor's Each 4-H’er in the contest was recognized for their accomplish ment with a state award card and pin sponsored by the Horseman’s Quarter Horse Association.
