Request made for motel moratorium at Banks Crossing
BY CHRIS BRIDGES
A group of motel owners has meet
with Banks County chairman Gene
Hart about placing a moratorium on
any future establishments being con
structed in the Banks Crossing area, at
least in the Banks County side.
Hart presented the proposal to fel
low commissioners Rickey Cain and
Joe Barefoot during Tuesday's meeting
although no action was taken.
Hart said concern was expressed that
with the current number of motels in
the Banks Crossing area, many were
only at 45 percent capacity in terms of
customers. If a moratorium was passed,
an exception could be made if a new
motel would be willing to include a
convention center.
“I am not asking for a decision from
the commissioners tonight,” Hart said.
“I just wanted to mention that this was
discussed.”
Bonnie Johnson, president of the
Banks County Convention and Visitor’s
Bureau was in attendance Tuesday
night, and asked to address the BOC
on the matter. Hart, however, said since
she had not previously requested to
speak that it would not be in proper
order to do so.
A request was scheduled to go before
the BOC Tuesday night from Premier
Hotel Group for a new four-story hotel
on Frontage Road but the representa
tive was late to the meeting and the
public hearing was not held. Once the
representative arrived, he said he has a
flat tire and was delayed.
Banks County attorney Randall Frost,
however, said the public hearing por
tion of the meeting had already been
held and the process would have to be
re-advertised.
Several other motel owners from the
Banks Crossing area asked of they
could speak in opposition anyway but
were denied the opportunity to do since
a public hearing would not be held on
the matter.
In other business at Tuesday's
55-minute meeting, the BOC:
•tabled a request from Michael and
Kay Butcher of Mike's Affordable
Parts to obtain a conditional use permit
for an expansion of an Internet sales
business at their home business.
•approved a beer license for MVP
Cafe, Inc.
•tabled a motion to name a replace
ment to fill the term of Dennis Brown
on the Development Authority.
•turned down an offer of a land dona
tion of three acres from PA. Bryan.
The land was valued at $19,840.
•voted to used the ICEAS design
for a wastewater treatment plant on
Duncan Bridge Road. Prior to the BOC
meeting Tuesday night, the commis
sioners met with a representative of
Rindt-McDuff Associates of Marietta
to go over four alternatives. The one
chosen is similar to the one being used
in Madison (Morgan County).
•held a 17-minute closed session to
discuss litigation. No action was taken.
Lula street closures

BY SHARON HOGAN
Several streets in the downtown Lula area
are slated to be closed on Thursday and
Friday of this week.
The city has contracted to have the water
tanks at the corner of Hammet Street and
Chattahoochee Street and Chattahoochee
Street and Athens Street demolished/
removed.
Chattahoochee Street will be closed to all
traffic from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. both Thursday,
Aug. 14, and Friday, Aug. 15.
The contractor states the work will take
the better park of the daylight hours and will
require a large crane on site.
Lula City Manager Dennis Bergin said at
Monday’s work session meeting that every
effort has been made to avoid disruption of
services for electricity, phone and cable.
Residents are being asked to plan activities
around the projected street closures and use
alternate routes to navigate the area.
