THURSDAY, AUGUST 14, 2008 THE BANKS COUNTY NEWS PAGE 5A Beware of the great laundry room flood A s I was looking over a neighbor’s new house plans, I couldn’t help but notice that the laundry room was locat ed on the second floor. Since the bedrooms were upstairs, she was convinced that it was a good idea. That was until I told her the story about the great flood. I had a friend who made the very same mistake. She thought that it was an ideal plan having the laundry room located on the upper level of their new home. One day she put a load of laundry in the washer, turned it on and left to go and pick up the kids at school. While she was out she decided to stop at the grocery store, phar macy and the library. She was gone a total of three hours. When return ing home, she was stunned to find a steady stream of water running out from underneath the front door. As she entered the house she encountered water flowing down the staircase, making its way from the foyer to the study and dining room. Within a matter of 30 minutes, the ceiling in the dining room began to give way. The chandelier came crashing down, destroy ing the large crystal antique vase sitting in the middle of the dining room table. The vase was a family heirloom. The hose on the back of the washing machine had come loose, causing the massive flood. The hardwood floors and stair case were ruined, and there was major ceiling damage in the din ing room and study. My friend and her family ended up having to move out of their home for nearly four months. After I told my neighbor the story about my friend’s very unfortunate event, she is now a little more hesitant about her decision of having a laundry room on the second floor.
