THURSDAY, AUGUST 21, 2008 THE BANKS COUNTY NEWS PAGE 7A Alto maintenance shop damaged; repairs needed BY SHARON HOGAN The Alto City Council unanimous ly agreed at a meeting on Aug. 12 to spend $7,670 for work on the city’s maintenance shop on McDaniel Street. The shop was damaged when the brakes failed on one of the city’s trucks and it hit the building. Alto Mayor Audrey Turner said the city would be submitting an estimate to its insurance provider for $5,408 in repairs to the building. Bids for the repairs and some addi tional work to repair water damage were submitted by A & M Builders, LLC, Alto. Alto City Clerk Penny Rogers said the work needs to be done as soon as possible because city employees have to go in the building every day and it is not safe. OTHER BUSINESS In other business at Tuesday’s council meeting: •the council unanimously agreed to pass a resolution authorizing the adoption of the Banks County Hazard Mitigation Plan. •approval was given to a list of roads to be submitted to the Georgia Department of Transportation to be included in the Local Assistance Road Program (LARP). The roads on the list are: Blalock Road, Porter Street, Wynn Shoals Road, Wheeler Circle, Railroad Avenue, Alto Congregational Holiness Church Road, Cornwall Place (fanning only) and B.C. Grant Road. The council also agreed to look at the qualifications required for the State Wildflower Beautification Project. •Code Enforcement Officer Joe Davidson told the council that as of July 1, 2008, all residential and general contractors must be licensed through the state in order to be able to buy a permit. Davidson said, “They are really cracking down on this.” •council member Cathy Armour said, “I think we need to have a day when we can pressure wash our houses and wash our cars.” Turner said, “We are having to buy water now.” Alto water customers are not conforming to the water restrictions. Turner said. Due to state regulations, the city is not allowed to go on a total water ban, Turner said. The city is currently looking at another well site. Turner also said the city has had three lightning strikes at the wells recently that have not been covered by insurance. •the council agreed to seek an Alto resident to serve on the Keep Habersham Beautiful committee. Council member Loretta Bosco announced her temporary resigna tion from this committee. •Police Chief Robin Krockum said, “We (police department) are out of space.” Krockum said the police department recently traded some cars and came out $16,000-$ 18,000 to the good and he would like to use this money to add on to the police department building. Krockum asked the council for permission to seek individuals to give a bid on doing the professional drawings of an addi tion to the building in order to seek licensed builders to bid on the proj ect. The council agreed unanimously to seek out individuals to complete the drawings and report back on this. Homer council approves fire department plans BY ANGELA GARY The Homer City Council approved a $200,000 proposal at last week’s meeting to complete the new fire station in the downtown area. Construction is already under way on the new facility. In other business, the council: •approved a pre-disaster hazard mitigation plan. •named Leslie George to serve another term on the Georgia Mountains Regional Development Commission. •named Bobby Lewallen to serve another term on the housing author ity. •learned that a meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 26, at city hall to discuss the comprehensive plan update.
