OUTDOORS WITH SKIPPER
HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL
Tough times recently in the outdoors
L ast Friday, Len
Camden and I
headed up to Lake
Burton on a windy day
to try out the used boat I
bought.
I also had bought a used
bow mounted trolling mo
tor. Arriving at the lake ,
we found you almost had
to submerge your truck to
get the boat off the trailer,
at least on this trailer, at the
Moccasin Creek launching
area.
With the boat now in
the water, we found that it
wasn’t sinking but floated
quite well. In fact, not a
drop of water in the riveted
hull 16’jon boat.
Lowering the trolling mo
tor, while keeping the boat
attached to the dock, we
found that the foot control
worked as well. So far, so
good.
Now it was time to crank
up the 40-hp older Mariner
motor. It turned over a bit
and died. Keeping the choke
out, it ran pretty good, until
we put it in forward gear,
then it died again.
Thank goodness, we
were still attached to the
dock. More tries, starting,
running, and then quitting.
We figured it must be the
carburetor.
Being older fellows,
with perhaps a little more
wisdom for our ages, we
decided
the best
course
of action
would
be to
just pull
the boat
back out
and take
the mo
tor for
a tune
up. We couldn’t see getting
stuck out on the lake with
that wind, even if the troll
ing motor would work.
So back to Danielsville
to the outboard shop for a
motor check out. Hope it is
something simple. Well, so
much for our Friday fishing
trip.
Then came Sunday. While
feeding one of my daugh
ter’s horses who is blind, (a
horse she has had for many
years) the horse thought I
was another horse and bit
me on the shoulder. Now
that smarts a right bit. Like
taking a vise grip pair of pli
ers and pinching yourself.
He knocked me back
wards onto the barn room
floor of dirt and clay, as
he caught me off balance,
with the thrust of his head.
Somewhat disoriented for
a moment, and trying to
figure out all that happened.,
I got back to my feet. Thank
the Lord, it seems like only
a few aches and pains, plus
the plier bite. Well, from the
bad things to a more enjoy
able one. I watched some
turkeys at the feeder in the
back yard.
Three young jakes, spent
many minutes, moving
around the feeder. Acting
like it was a rattlesnake.
They would move in a
little closer to the corn, and
then back off. Dart in and
then back. I don’t know if
they ever ate some corn.
Then later four or five old
long beards came to eat.
They walked right up to
the feeder and began eating
all the corn they wanted.
I guess that there is some
kind of lesson there. That
it is smart to be careful in
your youth, when you don’t
know what you are getting
into.
Also, that experience
teaches you what to be
afraid of and what is not
going to be a problem. The
young ones couldn’t enjoy
a meal, and the older ones
barged right into a feast.
Oh, well perhaps next
week will turn out better.

MIDDLE SCHOOL FOOTBALL
BCMS Leopards prepare for new season
BY CHRIS BRIDGES
Vince Lehotsky’s Banks
County Middle School
football team will begin
their 2008 adventure today
(Thursday) against Madison
County on the road.
The game was originally
set for Tuesday but was
pushed back two days.
BCMS took part in a
scrimmage last week against
Towns County. The event
was beneficial for the team,
Lehotsky said.
“It gave us an opportu
nity to play against someone
else,” the coach said. “We
used it as a measuring tool to
see where we need the most
improvement.”
The first home game will
be Tuesday against Rabun
County at 5 p.m.
“We haven’t played them
for the last two years,” Le
hotsky said. “I am glad they
are back on the schedule. It
is a good matchup for us to
play them.”

Sunday is work time for coaches
LEOPARD NC
BY CHRIS BRIDGES
It’s a time honored tradi
tion for high school football
coaches: Sunday afteroon
meetings.
During these planning ses
sions, which often last sev
eral hours, coaches break
down film and continue pre
paring a game plan for the
upcoming week’s opponent.
Banks County High School
head coach Blair Armstrong
said the first thing he and
his coaches will do is talk
about injuries. In addition,
information is kept track of
for varsity players’ letters,
which are awarded at the end
of the season.
Coahes then split up
into offense and defensive
groups. All coaches have al
ready watched film on their
own by this point and graded
their position players.
Coaches then talk about
the upcoming week’s oppo
nent and prepare a detailed
scouting report.
If necessary, coaches will
then meet again as an entire
group.
“It may take four hours,
it may take five, it may take
six,” Armstrong said. “It will
depend on several factors in
cluding an opponent. It is a
chess games.”
During film session, a play
may be run back five or six
times so coaches can break it
down from all angles.
This part of coaching is
an aspect many fans are not
familiar with. It is also a sac
rifice coaches must make in
being away from their fami
lies on Sundays.

in 2005 and 2006.
