OUTDOORS WITH SKIPPER
Take time now to spend with future of hunting
I believe this photo of my
four-year-old grandson
Carson, standing on the
back porch and looking out at the
feeder, tells it all.
He is the future of hunting and
fishing, along with your children
and grandchildren. I was looking
at a website recently in the area of
hunting leases available. A com
ment was made as to how many
hunting clubs were looking for
and needing members.
In the past it seemed like it was
the hunters who were searching
to find a good spot in any club.
Openings were scarce. Maybe the
economy is playing a big part this
fall.
Whatever the reason, your tak
ing, and making the time, to take
your young ones to the woods
and to the lakes with you is so
important. Not only will it build
a great bond
between a
father or
a grandfa
ther with
a young
ster, but it
will instill
something
very special
in that young
one.
They will
learn to
appreciate the beauty of God's
creation, as they watch daylight
begin. The cries of the crow, the
rustle of the squirrel hunting for
acorns, the woodpecker knocking
on the tree nearby. The touch on
the arm, a signal to be real quiet,
as a whisper says, “ look over
this way, here comes a nice deer.”
The “ high fives” as a beaming
youngster stands beside his or her
first trophy.
Doesn’t matter how big or
small the deer or fish, it was one
they got. The trip back home to
show others, with a big smile on
one’s face. “Wow!” you got it
all by yourself?” “Yep, me and
grandpa.”
Memories are being made, that
will continue on at some future
dinner table. Relationships are
forged, that will prove invaluable
when the teenage years come.
Go ahead and buy that two per
son stand or blind, make it a fun
time, even when junior wiggles
too much, and the game runs off.
One day when you and I are too
old to climb up the ladder stand
any more, or even make it to the
woods, we can sit back in our
rocking chair and let our minds
wander over the wonderful times
we and the youngsters enjoyed
together.
It will bring a smile to our wrin
kled faces, and cause a twinkle in
our eyes.
Yep, hunting season is around
the corner now, take advantage of
this great opportunity with your
young ones. Bow season will open
in a couple of weeks. If you have
an outdoors story, do give me a
call.

BEHIND THE SCENES
Some of the unsung heros during football season include the
team managers. Two of the managers for the Banks County High
School Leopards include Kelsey McNabb and Kayla Jones.

Racing continued from page 1A
Pollard started by setting a fast time
in qualifying, but moved to the seventh
starting spot after a driver inversion put
16-year-old Casey Roderick into the
top spot. Roderick, who just turned 16,
was recently named as a development
driver for the Bill Elliott Driver Devel
opment program. Elliott watched his
young driver make his way to an eighth
place finish from the spotter’s tower
above the main grandstand.
Roderick led early, but was passed on
lap 19 by Kelley and Satterfield. Sat
terfield moved out front, staying there
for much of the race. But late in the
going, Kelley and Pollard chased down
the Commerce racer, and moved past as
Satterfield began to fade.
Pollard and Kelley began battling
for the top spot, and with eight laps
remaining, Pollard made the final pass
for the win.
The scariest moment of the night oc
curred in the first event of the evening,
the local Mini-Stock division.
During a restart on lap seven of the
caution-riddled event, the car of Lance
Beck made contact with the turn two
wall, then drifted down the track where
he made contact with the car of Jeffer
son’s William Ernst.
Earnest’s car flipped side over side
down the backstretch five or six times,
finally coming to rest against the inside
guardrail. Ernst climbed out of the car
moments later, uninjured.
