A God of second chances
Sometimes we get
off track and head
out in the opposite
direction from what
God has in store for
us. At times, we may
choose our own job,
our own relation
ships, or where we
go to church. We fail
to stop and see what
the Lord has in store
for us; or maybe we
are a bit rebellious and want to
do things our own way.
Recently, I found myself
heading down that path. I
knew the Lord had spoken
to my heart about something
and I had failed to do it. As I
repented the Lord took me to
Jonah 3: 1 which says, “Then
the word of the Lord came to
Jonah a second time.”
I began to praise Him for be
ing a God of second chances.
We all fail at times, and time
after time in the Bible, we see
where people are given another
chance.
In the book of Jonah, we
find that God asked him to go
to Nineveh and preach repen
tance. Jonah went in the op
posite direction and hopped
aboard a ship headed for Tar-
shish. When the boat got out to
sea, a violent storm arose and
the ship threatened to break
up. They tried to sail back to
land but they couldn’t because
the storm grew even wilder
than before. That is when the
sailors decided to ask Jonah
exactly what he had done to
displease God so very much.
Jonah knew what he’d done
and told the sailors to throw
him overboard and they did.
Thankfully, that is not the end
of the story.
A big fish came along and
swallowed Jonah up and he
lived in the belly of that fish
for three days and three nights.
Jonah began to call
on the Lord and
that’s when the big
fish spit him out on
dry land.
When God spoke
to Jonah a second
time telling him
to go to the great
city of Nineveh, he
obeyed. He went
into the city and
proclaimed God’s
message, “Forty days and Ni
neveh will be overthrown.”
The Ninevites believed God,
declared a fast and they were
saved.
That is just one of many sto
ries about second chances. The
one that I am most thankful for
starts in Genesis 2 and 3, where
we find the story of Adam and
Eve. When they sinned in the
garden, it could have been all
over for us.
I thank God that He loved
us enough to offer us another
solution. I thank Him for a
second chance. Now this did
come at a great cost, when Je
sus Christ came to this earth
and became the sacrifice for
all of our sins. The sinless Son
of God was nailed to an old
rugged cross and died so that
we could have eternal life. He
didn’t stay in that tomb. On
the third day. He rose from the
grave and ascended to heaven
and will come back to earth to
get us one day.
If you find yourself in need
of a second chance today, just
repent and call on His name.
Let the word of the Lord come
to you a second time, and be
ready to do His will. That is
the only place we will find true
contentment.

gregational Holiness Church.
