OUTDOORS WITH SKIPPER
Bow season opens this Saturday
I t all began last week at the Homer Hard
ware store.
Sitting around and talking about the
upcoming bow season on Friday morning,
Sam Wilson said that he had really been prac
ticing with his bow and was doing pretty good
on the deer targets.
That conversation led to a Saturday evening
outing, to check things out. Sam was right
on the target at 30 yards. I thought his second
arrow might split the first. Really great shoot
ing.
If he doesn’t get a deer on opening day I
will be surprised. Of course they have got to
be there, and within range, for that to happen.
At the suggestion of Sam's dad, a couple of
us got together and headed out to some stands
to see if we could see a few deer. The ham
burgers would be ready when we got back.
Sam and I went to James Wilson's stand.
Jimmy and his son Ben, went to another. If
you want comfort, James' stand is it.
A nice quiet swivel chair for me, and
another chair for Sam. Drop down windows
were there for when it is cold, rainy or windy.
Nice wooden steps up to it. Great for an older
fellow like me.
James had been seeing some nice bucks
out of it, but told us he had bushogged it just
recently , and that might affect seeing the
deer, till they got used to the changes. Well,
we waited and waited, as we were entertained
by a spider making a web next to us.
As the light faded, and we used binoculars
to help us penetrate the
darkness, no deer came
into view. We were
hungry anyway, so we
headed back.
Turns out, that
Jimmy and Ben saw
nothing either. Just one
of those evenings. With
hamburgers, fresh to
matoes, pork n beans,
and chocolate chip
cookies for desert, we
ate, and talked about
the upcoming deer season.
Back at home, I pulled out my old White-
tail II Bow.
I haven't shot it in eight years or so. In
Florida, it had taken a nice four point for me.
Getting it tuned up, hopefully I can pull it
back once more. Those muscles used to pull
back the bow, seemed to be unused or worn
out. If I can't get them working, I reckon, at
age 67,1 will have to go to a cross bow. We'll
see what develops.
Hope you are able to get into the woods this
Saturday. If you take a nice deer or better yet
a bear, let me know about it. Give me a call at
706-677-1520.
