School officials said these
students worked diligently
during the week of pre-plan
ning on bulletin boards, post
ers and recruitment activities
to implement the FCCLA
National and State theme
for 2008-2009 6 iExcellence

bers said they are excited
to begin this year stronger
than ever and noted the local
chapter will be revolution
ized and electrified this year
as it moves toward new hori
zons.
The 2008-2009 member
ship campaign theme, iBe
Part of It, is now underway
with membership dues this
year set at $12.
These officers have been
working on ways to recruit,
retain and recognize FCCLA
members on local, state and
national levels, school offi
cials said.
Events and activities are
being planned to encourage
the development of excellent
leadership skills, promote
positive attitudes and enhance
teamwork relationships. Of
ficers are working to equip
members and students with
the tools to empower and to
zap new energy into their in
dividual lives, families, ca
reers and community.

Art contest planned at BCES
R&B Landfill and Banks
County Elementary School
are holding a iSave The Earth
Art Contest.! The purpose is
to encourage and teach stu
dents, and grown-ups alike,
about the importance of pro
tecting the environment.
The curriculum at BCES
will focus on how environ
mental problems could be
addressed and will encour
age the students to help find
solutions to these problems.
Art teacher Katie Harrison
started a recycling program
at the elementary school for
the collection of plastic bot
tles and paper last year and
it continues on this year.
iMany materials we use
every day can be reused
and recycled,! leaders said.
iWe must teach our children
ways to reduce how much
garbage we throw away.
Students will be asked to
draw a picture suggesting
ideas and actions that the
student can take to increase
awareness and protect our
environment.
Waste Management and
R&B Landfillfs goal is to get
the students thinking about
the problem and providing
us with their solutions in art
form.
The artwork should be
drawn in color on an 8 Vi X
11 inch piece of white paper.
The drawings will be judged
on how well the artwork rep
resents ideas on protecting
our environment, recycling
or reusing and artistic merit
on each grade level.
Students will submit their
drawing to the art teacher by
the end of the school day on
Nov. 14. For identification,
their name, age and grade

second, and third place win

each grade 6 third, fourth
and fifth. First place win
ners will receive a $50 gift

Colton Standridge, 13, who
was injured in a four-wheel
accident on Aug. 18, con
tinues to improve and has
been moved from Egleston
Children’s Hospital to Scot
tish Rite Hospital in Atlanta.
Standridge has been walking
some and talking to his parents,
according to family members.
He received serious brain
injuries from the accident and
underwent several surgeries at
Egleston.
Colton is an eighth grade
student at EJMS. His mother,
the former Tammy Booth, is
a teacher at East Jackson El
ementary School, and his fa
ther, Warren Standridge, is a
teacher and coach at Jackson
County Comprehensive High
School.
