Based on Victor Hugo’s classic novel.
“Les Miserables” is an epic saga that
sweeps through three turbulent decades
of 19th century France. It is the story of
one man, the fugitive Jean Valjean, who
is pitted against the cruel and self-righ
teous Inspector Javert. The story begins
in France in 1916 when Valjean is re
leased from prison for the crime of steal
ing a loaf of bread. He’s spent 19 years
on a chain gang and now by law he must
display a yellow card at all times and so
is condemned to be an outcast. Only the
saintly Bishop Digne treats him kindly
and the parolee repays him by stealing
his silver. Valjean is caught by police
and is astonished when the Bishop lies to
save him. Valjean vows to start his life
anew. This powerful tale of love, loss,
triumph and redemption includes mem
orable songs such as “One Day More”
and “Do You Hear The People Sing?”
“Les Miserables” has won more than
50 major awards, including a Grammy
and eight Tony Awards. The show has
broken all kinds of records: On June
22, 2002, “Les Miserables” became the
first Broadway musical ever to play in
China with a three-week engagement
in Shanghai. The Broadway production
ended its 16-year run on May 18, 2003.
On October 6, 2006, “Les Miserables”
became the world’s longest running mu
sical.
Written by Boublil and Schonberg,
“Les Miserables” was adapted from the
French by Herbert Kretzmer, and has ad
ditional material by James Fenton. This
production is licensed through Music
Theatre International by arrangement
with Cameron Mackintosh.
