THE BANKS COUNTY NEWS
THURSDAY, SEPTEMVBER 18, 2008
Focus on literacy during September
September is the month to
focus on literacy, according to
Sharon Clark, director of the
county literacy program.
Clark said, “We all know
that the ability to read is fun
damental to success in school
and on the job, but did you
know that effective read
ing involves much more than
the ability to decode (read)
words? Many readers can
‘get through' a text but have
difficulty comprehending the
information presented, or they
may be so focused on figuring
out the words that they lose fo
cus on their purpose for read
ing.
“Various strategies are avail
able to help you increase read
ing comprehension, speed, and
efficiency. If you’d like to im
prove your reading skills, the
Banks County Adult Learning
Center can help you. We have
a program to meet your needs
and learning style, whether
you prefer to work indepen
dently, one-on-one with a tu
tor, or in small groups. We
are currently registering stu
dents for classes beginning in
October.”
Literacy is not limited to the
ability to read, Clark said.
“Math has a language of its
own too,” Clark said. “The
Banks County Adult Learning
Center offers a math literacy
course called ‘Painless Alge
bra,' which is designed to help
you master the operations and
number concepts foundational
to algebra.”
This class meets every Tues
day and Thursday evening
from 6 to 8 p.m. and is open to
people 18 years and older.
The Banks County Adult
Learning Center also offers a
basic computer literacy class.
“This class is perfect for
people who are afraid to get
their new computers out of the
box, or those who tell them
selves that they really should
do something more with the
computer sitting in the corner
of their living room than dust
it once a week,” Clark said.
Computer literacy classes
meet every Monday from 2 to
3:30 p.m. The center is now
registering for classes begin
ning in October.
“If you are an adult who
needs help with reading, math,
or basic computer skills please
call or come by the center to
schedule an assessment and
register for classes beginning
in October,” Clark said.
All classes offered at the
Banks County Adult Learning
Center are tuition free (a $10
technology fee is required for
the computer literacy class)
and classes are now filling for
fall quarter, which begins in
October.
The center Is located just off
Thompson St. at 127 Hudson
Valley Drive, just behind the
Banks County Health Depart
ment. The hours are: 8:30
a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Mondays
and Wednesdays and noon to 8
p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.
