OUTDOORS WITH SKIPPER
Venturing to the Bluegrass State
H eading to Kentucky for my wife’s
family reunion last week, we had
to make a stop by my favorite
spot “Cades Cove.”
It was on a Thursday, and there was not
a lot of traffic on the “Loop Road.” There
wasn’t a lot of game to be seen either,
though the weather and conditions seemed
to be good. It was around 3 p.m. in the after
noon, not the best time for viewing wildlife.
We had seen an elk walking the tree line
near the highway, as we entered the Smoky
Mountains out of Cherokee. That was a first
for us at that location.
In the park we saw four does, no turkeys,
no bears, no big bucks, as we have in the
past. Still, as you that have been there before
know, it was a most beautiful and relaxing
drive.
On Friday we stopped out of Knoxville at
the “Museum of the Appalacians” for four
hours we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves as
we were taken back in time to the days of
the pioneers. The most fantastic collection
of items used by the mountain folks, I have
ever seen.
During a bit of rain, we sat on the front
porch of one of the log cabins, and listened
to a fellow playing the guitar and singing a
song about “ Butterbeans.” That was another
highlight of the day. At the reunion in Mon-
ticello, Kentucky, “ Uncle Willard,” age 91,
was the focus of it all.
On Saturday evening, my wife’s cousin
and her husband hosted a “picking and
grinning” time in the country. All the folks
in the community were invited to bring a
covered dish, a chair, or a blanket, and listen
to blue grass from five
until 10 at night. A 25
gallon pot of chili had
been cooked up to go
with the rest of the
food. Some times there
are 400 or so neighbors
visiting, listening, and
just having a great time.
I enjoyed talking
with the farmers who
enjoyed hunting and
fishing. We swapped
stories for a good while. One fellow has
already taken 21 coyotes this year, along
with a nice 10-point buck with his bow. An
older man, Bob, told me during the depres
sion that his dad used to sell possum hides.
In fact, he said his dad had a possum dog
that was very smart.
They could let the old dog smell a board
where the possum skin had been tacked up
on and that dog would then go out and catch
a possum just the size to fit the board.
This worked for along time, until one day
his wife had let the ironing board down to
the ground. Seems the dog mistook it for a
possum tanning board and took off hunting
for a possum that size. It was gone for three
weeks.
Oh well, let me know about your bow
hunting.
