Tanger Outlet Center begins expansion project
ADDING 37,000 SQUARE FEET
Tanger Outlet Center at Banks Crossing has begun an expansion project that
will add nearly 37,000 square feet to the existing shopping center.
Tanger Outlet Center
in Commerce, has just
embarked on a major expan
sion project that will add
nearly 37,000 square feet to
the current shopping center.
The center's new, free
standing expansion area
is scheduled to accom
modate several new outlet
brands. New stores sched
uled to open at Tanger will
include Loft, Gymboree and
Skechers. Additional stores
will be announced in the
near future.
Since its opening in 1995
with 30 stores, the Tanger
Outlet Center in Commerce
has had a history of continued
growth. Having expanded to
its current collection of 75
stores, Tanger in Commerce
attracts more than 4 million
shoppers annually and has
earned its reputation as one
of the south's top shopping
destinations.
“We are excited to give
our Tanger customers in
Commerce an even greater
selection of the most popu
lar brand name and designer
stores to choose from,” said
Stanley K. Tanger, chairman
and chief executive officer
of Tanger Factory Outlet
Centers, Inc. “We love doing
business in Commerce,
Georgia. This expansion is
a $3 million investment in
the Tanger center and the
Commerce community.”
In Commerce, Tanger cur
rently features such outlet
stores as Polo Ralph Lauren,
Nike, Tommy Hilfiger,
Abercrombie & Fitch
Outlet, Timberland, Brooks
Brothers, Eddie Bauer Outlet
and many more and is con
veniently located on 1-85 at
Banks Crossing, exit 149.
Tanger Town Centre, also
located at the same exit off of
1-85 in Commerce, features a
mix of value retail, enter
tainment and outlet stores
including Goody's Family
Clothing, Old Navy, Reebok/
Rockport Outlet, Petsense,
Black & Decker and more.
The nearly 100 stores at
the Tanger centers create
approximately 1,000 retail
management and sales posi
tions. In addition to provid
ing a significant economic
benefit to area hotels, restau
rants and many service busi
nesses, Tanger helps gener
ate estimated local property
tax revenue of $281,000 and
$7.5 million in local and
state sales tax each year.
Tanger's expansion project
is also creating dozens of
high paying construction
jobs. Tanger also operates
another popular outlet shop
ping center in Locust Grove,
on Interstate 75, just south

Farm Bureau urges 'yes'
vote for amendment #1
Henry D. Banks, presi
dent of Banks County Farm
Bureau, urges all Banks
County citizens to vote yes
on Amendment #1 on the
November 4 ballot.
“Many of our timber farm
ers are leaving Georgia due
to other surrounding states
offering similar tax breaks,”
Banks said. “The current tax
structure penalizes our for
estland owners by increas
ing land values, which also
increases their property tax
es. Some are increased to the
point that they are forced to
sell the land for commercial
development.”
Amendment #1 deals with
property taxes and forest
land. Its passage will allow
forestland to be taxed ac
cording to its value as a for
est instead of its potential
value as commercially de
veloped property. The State
of Georgia will reimburse
local governments for their
lost tax revenue.
The amendment will work
one of two ways. If the coun
ty’s revenue loss is three
percent or less, the state will
reimburse half of their lost
revenue. Any losses above
three percent will be fully
reimbursed by the state.
To qualify, forestland
owners must be willing to
sign a 15 year legal cov
enant to keep their land in
tree production. There are
substantial penalties for
breaking the covenant.
“Amendment #1 will
benefit our state in many
ways,” Banks said. “First,
it supports Georgia’s $25
billion forest industry and
the 150,000 jobs it creates.
Georgia is the number one
forestry state in the nation,
and trees are a major factor
in our economy. According
to a Georgia Tech study, 64
of Georgia’s 159 counties
significantly rely on forests
and forest product compa
nies.
“Second, forestland is
good for the environment.
Trees help clean our air and
water and reduce soil ero
sion. Forests also provide
habitat for wildlife and rec
reational opportunities like
hunting, fishing and hiking.
“Third, forests add to our
quality of life. One of the
first things noticed by visi
tors to our state is how green
Georgia is. Amendment #1
encourages landowners to
keep their land in forests.
Of Georgia’s 37 million to
tal acres, 24.8 million acres
is forestland.
“Amendment #1 is good
for the economy, the envi
ronment, and our quality of
life. It is a broadly support
ed amendment. Governor
Sonny Perdue enthusiasti
cally signed it and it passed
the General Assembly with
only 1 opposing vote. Go
to the polls on November 4
and vote YES for Amend
ment #1.”
