A Texas man who grew up
in Banks County and still has
relatives in the area has com
peted in marathons in all 50
states.
Stacy Caudell completed a
marathon recently in Maine
which was the 50th state for
him.
“I am now a finisher in the
50 States Marathon Club,” he
said. “I completed a 26.2 mile
marathon in my 50th state last
Sunday in Portland, Maine.”
Caudell said he had just
been “a casual 5K and 10K
weekend runner” when some
friends challenged him to try a
marathon. His first effort was
the Smoky Mountain Mara
thon in Townsend, Tenn., in
1992.
‘‘I only wanted to improve
on my time after the first
one,” he said. “I had no idea
it would lead to doing all 50
states.
‘‘I just ran the ones that
I thought would be spe
cial. The Marine Corps in
Washington, D.C., was very
special. The course went by
all the monuments in our Cap
ital. Chicago was my fastest
at 3 hours 14 minutes. I quali
fied for Boston and ran it in
1996, the 100th anniversary.
