He and his dad, Jerry, were hunting in an area where they had been doing some landfill work. Sitting on the ground, with his dad doing the same some distance away, Randy saw the big one coming. It was a big eight pointer. At around one hundred yards, Randy dropped the deer hitting it in the neck. You can ask him where he was really aiming. With his dad’s help, they loaded the estimated 200-pound buck into the back of the truck. They stopped by the hardware store in Homer, and let us see the nice rack. Meat in the freezer for those two, and I’m sure dad will share in the spoils for his ef fort. Congratulations on a suc cessful hunt. There was another success ful hunter last week. AT TRACK Two local guys had lots of fun spending the day down at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Kevin Gar rison, son of Pete and Lynda Garrison and Rodney Dale, son of Ter ry and Wanda Dale had the opportunity to drive 18 laps each at the Rich ard Petty Driving Experi ence. They had fast laps of 143 mph and 147 mph. The instructor said they did good on their driving experience. James Wilson, of Apple Valley, was hunting behind his house in the nice stand he built. I described it in a previous story: a comfortable chair, room for two, all en closed. Well, right at dark on a recent Monday, a nine-pointer came into view. Planning to shoot it in the neck, James’ aim was a little off. We will allow that for a person who is the same age as myself. He hit it in the ear and bust ed off a seven-inch tine. They found the tine that night. The following Wednesday evening, James was back in his stand. Lo and behold, here came the same nine-pointer minus one tine. James hit it in the spine this time and it is down for good. Heading back to get some help, he rounded up Sam Wilson who helped him load it in the truck. The buck would probably score around 120 or 130 and weigh around 180 pounds. The thought was to glue the tine back on, when the deer was mounted. With a bul let hole also in its ear from the first shot, they decided it would be best to just tie the broken tine onto the rest of the antlers. That would open the door to tell the rest of the story, about the deer that came back miss ing part of its antlers, and end ed up in James’ freezer.
