Yard sale planned at BCPS
The Banks County Primary
School Relay for Life team
is sponsoring a yard sale or
gym sale in the school gym
nasium on Saturday, Novem
ber 15, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
All proceeds will be do
nated to the American Can
cer Society via the Relay
for Life. The yard sale will
include children's cloth
ing and toys, adult clothing,
household items and miscel
laneous holiday items.
BCHS FCCLA Attends
Fall Leadership Rally

FCCLA (Family, Career, and
Community Leaders of Amer
ica) members attended the Fall
Leadership Rally at the Geor
gia National Fair in Perry on
Oct. 8.
FCCLA chapter members
entered a Recruitment Bro
chure Contest, a T-Shirt De
sign Contest, Knowledge Bowl
Competition Contest and Chili
Cook Off Contest.
BCHS members and officers
competed with other FCCLA
chapters throughout the state
of Georgia. Featured keynote
speaker for this rally was Dr.
Adolf Brown.
The goal of Dr. Browns
presentation was to motivate
students to become tomorrows
leaders by being the apple on
the tree, not the apple on the
ground.
Dr. Brown discussed the im
portance of exhibiting a posi
tive self-image. He related
self-image characteristics to
leadership activities, such as
participation in Power of One.
Power of One, an FCCLA
state and national project ac
tivity, focuses on a better you,
family ties, working on work
ing, take the lead and speaking
out for FCCLA. He stressed
the importance of building
better personal skills and self-
confidence to help develop
dynamic leadership skills and
make career connections.
Georgia Farm Bureau
Georgia Farm Bureau will
award a total of $14,250
in scholarships to ten high
school seniors who plan to
pursue a college degree in
agriculture or family and
consumer sciences, Henry D.
Banks, Banks County Farm
Bureau president, recently
announced.
The top three students will
each receive a scholarship of
$3,000. The remaining seven
students will each receive a
$750 scholarship. Students
are eligible to submit an ap
plication if they, a parent or
legal guardian were a mem
ber of Georgia Farm Bureau
as of September 1. The schol
arships are sponsored by the
Georgia Farm Bureau Mu
tual Insurance Company, in
cooperation with the Georgia
Farm Bureau Women’s Com
mittee.
Applicants must plan to
enter a unit of the Univer
sity System of Georgia or
Berry College during the
2009-2010 academic year to
pursue an undergraduate de
gree in agricultural and envi
ronmental sciences, family
and consumer sciences or a
related agricultural field. All
applications must be submit
ted by December 12. Schol
arship recipients will be an
nounced in March.
BOOK CHARACTER DAY AT BCES
Lora Bellamy’s fifth grade class dressed up as
book characters as a part of Fall Fun Day at Banks
County Elementary School. The students also had
to write a summary of their book, and present it to
the class.
Local residents earn degrees
Several Banks County resi
dents earned degrees during Au
gust commencement ceremonies
at North Georgia College and
State University.
They are: William Shubert,
Baldwin, a bachelor's degree in
history; Timothy White, B aldwin,
an education specialist degree in
teacher leadership; and Sharon
Matheny, Maysville, a bachelor's
degree in physical education.
The Charmaine Show
Charmaine Augustin, the work life balance expert
will join the airwaves at WJJC Radio each morning,
five days a week at 8:30 am starting November 3.
Charmaine is a Life Coach, freelance writer, author
and motivational speaker. She believes in family
values and education.

CHILI COOK-OFF
Jessica Wade, an 11 th grade FCCLA (Family, Ca
reer, and Community Leader of America) member
at Banks County High School competed in a Chili
Cook-Off Contest at the FCCLA Fall Leadership
Rally in Perry recently. Wade was one of 18 FC
CLA members from across the state of Georgia that
prepared chili from a selected recipe. Convenience
sauces and/or mixes were not allowed to be used
during this event. Wade and her mother, Janell
Roberts adjusted ingredients to meet their own per
sonal taste. She prepared her chili in front of an au
dience including parents, chaperones and FCCLA
members and advisers from across the state. Wade
is pictured as she participates in this state FCCLA
competition.

HIGH TEST SCORES
These Banks County students scored perfect in
at least one section of the CRCT. They were rec
ognized at a recent meeting of the Banks County
Board of Education.
