NIX BAGS EIGHT-POINT TROPHY BUCK Cody Nix, 13, harvested a nice an eight-point buck on open ing day of deer season. OUTDOORS WITH SKIPPER The young and the old t started with a trip to Bass Pro. Insulated coveralls, an orange facemask of his choosing, and an orange vest, made up the list of items for a young fellow, my grandson Carson, age four. All this was in preparation for his first hunting trip with Grandpa into the woods behind our house. A ground blind was also put up with two comfortable chairs for grandson and Grandpa. He had his hunting clothes ready before the first trip. In fact, he wore them all day, my daughter said, even for his afternoon nap. That Saturday afternoon, Carson and I headed out to the woods. We got into our ground blind, opened some windows, and kept some closed, so the deer wouldn’t see us. This was as exciting for Grandpa as for grandson. The young one’s first trip hunting. As we listened to sounds, I would ask Car- son to tell me what they were: the sound of a crow overhead, a squirrel look ing for acorns, the tap ping of a woodpecker on a dead tree. We didn’t see any deer on this first trip, but we did have a great time. I recall the well-given in structions of when hunt ing or fishing with a youngster, make it a fun time. Let them do what they would like to do. If it’s tossing rocks in the stream, or getting his feet wet wading, that’s ok. There will come a time, as they grow up, for it to become a serious hunting or fishing trip, but till then just have a good time being together. That was the trip for the four-year- old. Now fast-forward ahead for 85 years, and meet up with my dad, Carson’s great-Grandpa Stockton Smith, soon to be 90 years young in six months. Dad came up here for a visit, and as he had taken me fishing and given me a love for it since I was Carson’s age, we still like to get together on a lake or at a river. His eyesight is not as good as it used to be, but he can still find the cork. We headed out skipper smith last Friday afternoon to a lake in the woods, hopeful that we could catch some nice catfish. The day was beautiful, the trees arrayed in their golden and reds. Sitting in a couple of chairs out on the dock, the fishing began. The bream that had been small last year, were now about eating size. We caught and re leased about a dozen, and had a great time just recalling old times. Not a catfish was caught, but that didn’t matter. It was the time together that was the most important. That evening we headed up to Royston for a barbecue supper and a bit of dad’s favorite, Brunswick stew. He ended up with two help ings. This writer cherishes these special times with the young and the old. On the hunting scene: two nice ten-pointers were taken last weekend. One from a stand I had hunted in a few weeks ago. I only saw a yearling. Oh well, maybe next trip. If you get a nice deer, give me a call. Skipper Smith is an outdoors col umnist for The Banks County News. His column appears weekly.
