‘CONTRACTION SURGERY’AT BCES
Third grade classes at Banks County Elementary School are studying about con
tractions. To be sure that the students understood the concept in a memorable way,
the teachers looked for ideas on the Internet. Finding a perfect plan, they introduced
the contraction through “Surgery.” Mrs. Sutton dressed as a surgical nurse and
proceeded to cut out the excess from the two words making them a smaller more
easily said/read word. The students aided in the process as nurses and helped in
the stitching. They also used a stethoscope to be sure the new word had come out
of the surgery okay. Surgical tape was used to be sure the stitches stayed in place.
The apostrophe was the scar left over from the surgery that was used to remove
the unnecessary letters. Then, the students used each of the newly formed words in
sentences. Lastly, they followed up with a contraction song submitted on the same
site. Noah Brown is shown assisting Mrs. Sutton with the “contraction surgery.”
