NINE-POINT TROPHY Scott Lafollette, of Starke, Fla., harvested this nine-pointer Satur day. The nine-pointer joins an eight-pointer Lafollette killed last Wednesday. Times past 1 E i ^ j "* I ' ? ■, l K H is dad, Larry Lafol lette, was the music di rector at the church in Starke, Fla. some twenty years ago. I happened to be the preach er, and Larry and I both en joyed deer hunting. Larry raised some mighty fine hunting dogs and was a big coon hunter as well. I went coon hunting with him one time, and that was enough for me. Walking through swamps in the dead of night, stepping over logs, and wondering where the wa ter moccasin snakes were, as well as trying to figure out where in the world we were, was enough. Scott, and his sister Amy, were just little ones back then, I reckon they must have been around four and six, or per haps a bit younger. I recall their playing in the sand on a dirt road in our hunting club while we waited for the dogs to jump deer. A lot of great times were spent at their place in the coun try with my entire family. There were horses to ride, one named Skipper, not named after me, but a gentle one the chil dren could all ride. My daughter, who loves horses, spent much time at the La- follettes’ place. Larry was a farrier and still is, though I believe he has slowed down a bit, after many horse related injuries. Many a night, my daughter Heather and I have spent, along with Larry and his crew, waiting for the dogs to come out of the swamp after a deer chase. The hour would be late, but courtesy demanded that you stay until the last dog was caught up, or the owner de cided to come back the next morning to find his dog. Now Scott is grown up, and his sister Amy is in college. Scott had a great week hunting last week. Hunting on the family property, on Wednesday he took a nice eight-pointer. He followed that up with a nine-pointer from the same area on Saturday. You cer tainly can’t do much better than that. Congratulations Scott on such great success. Looks like in Banks Coun ty, the rut ought to be in this week and next, with herds of bucks chasing does. Let me know how you do. Skipper Smith is an outdoors columnist for The Banks County News.
