The 4-H Cotton Boll and
Consumer Jamboree activity
featured two facets of compe
tition. Senior 4-H'ers (grades
9-12) presented a ninety sec
ond public service announce
ment about cotton. 4-H'ers in
grades 4-8 prepared a poster
to promote cotton and used the
poster to present a thirty sec
ond cotton commercial. Each
contestant also tested their
clothing and consumer knowl
edge by ranking four classes of
clothing, consumer goods or
services from “best to worst”
for a particular buying situ
ation. Items judged this year
were: MP3 Players, Hooded
Sweatshirts, Cell Phone Plans,
and Pre-packaged Deli Lunch
es.
“The 4-H'ers learned how to
make knowledgeable, rational
decisions when purchasing
goods and services,” accord
ing to Gina K. Gailey, Banks
County Extension 4-H Agent.
“They also learned the impor
tance of cotton as an apparel
fiber. As a result, 4-H’ers un
derstand how to get the most
for their dollar while acting
as responsible consumer citi
zens,” Mrs. Gailey said.
The Junior team finished
second out of 19 teams in the
contest and the Senior team
finished third overall.
“This was exciting news
after spending more than six
weeks practicing and getting
ready for the competition,”
Gailey said.
