THURSDAY, DECEMBER 4, 2008 THE BANKS COUNTY NEWS PACE 3B SECOND PLACE FINISH The Lady Leopards finshed second in the Jackson County Tourney Nov. 25. The team went on to de feat Lakeview 47-40 on Monday in the Banks Coun ty home opener. Photo by Justin Poole Lady Leopards continued from page IB Leopards Basketball continued from page IB Lead scorer Kevin Daniel scored 15 points and made the all tournament team. Chase Armour also made the all tournament team and scored 11 points. Brett Armour also scored 11 points. Rounding out the top scorers, Kane Duncan scored nine points. Lakeview Monday night was a rough night for the Leopards as Lakeview controlled the tempo of the game. During the first quarter Banks did a good job of holding the Lakeview offense and was leading 13-12, but as the game progressed so did the number of fouls being called. A series of controversial calls by officials hampered the Leopards during the second quarter. Ruth said that the play ers got out of sync. During the second quarter Lakeview scored 23 points while Banks only scored seven. “We started off on fire,” said Ruth. “They started catch ing back up with us ... the kids got it into their heads and just folded up in the second quarter. We never recovered from that. ... We lost focus, and we cannot do that.” Ruth said that Lakeview deserves credit for playing a full court, man-man defense and the Leopards were not execut ing their press offense. Banks allowed 26 turnovers, many coming off of the press. Once the Leopards ran into foul trouble, several players had to sit early including Duncan and Daniel. According to Ruth, almost every player had four fouls. “We will get better. Our kids are going to work hard,” Ruth said. “No matter what the score is or how the game is being officiated we have to stay focused and do what we need to do.” on Monday night. The Lady Leopards cor rected their mistakes from the season opener against Lakeview to take a 47-40 victory that came down to the wire. “We played a lot bet ter defense tonight,” said coach Jerry King after the game. “We had three quar ters of scoring rather than just two. We communicat ed a little bit better and made smarter decisions shooting.” Lakeview tried early on to shake Banks County, but the Lady Leopards stuck with them trailing only by one point at the end of the first quarter, 11-12. Putting 11 points up in the second quarter, the Lady Leopards were still trailing at the half 22-25. Making their move in the third quarter, Banks County put five points on the boards and held the Lady Lions to only two points to tie 27-27. In the final eight minutes of the game Lakeview managed to score 13 points, but the Lady Leopards broke through the defense scor ing 20 points to end the game 47-40 for Banks. Leading the charge for the ladies, Deasha Beasley scored 12 points. Second leading scorer Lauren Kennedy totaled 10 points, followed by Sam Kennedy with nine points. In addition, L. Kennedy rebounded 14 and had four blocks, Beasley led steals with four and Lacey Saxon picked up three assists and scored seven points. King said, “The big dif ference [Monday night] was defense. Beasley gave us a big spark defensive ly.” Jackson County In the championship round of the Jackson County Thanksgiving Tournament on Nov. 25, the Lady Leopards played the worst game so far. “We played flat-footed,” said King. “We didn’t shoot the ball well.” Coach King said that the ladies have to learn to focus on how to benefit the season rather than on the particular game, when the ladies play higher-classed schools like Jackson County. “We are really getting to work on our man defense facing some of these teams,” King said. Undefeated Jackson County went up 12-5 in the first quarter, followed by a 15-point increase in the second quarter. At half time, Banks was down by 18 points, 27-9. In the third quarter, the Banks defense was hard- pressed to stop the Lady Panther offense which pushed Jackson County up an additional 14 points to extend the lead 41-17. In the final quarter, Banks was trying to hold on as Jackson County went on to win 53-25. In the low scoring game, S. Kennedy led Banks County with eight points followed by Beasley, Kellany Merck and Jessica Grisham each with three points.
