A beautiful, 150 acres of family land in the mountains of Virginia. In fact it was only some thirty miles or so from Lexington and Washington and Lee University, where I had attended college many years ago. A pretty stone home, a trout stream, and good hunting made it a paradise. It is on DePriest Mountain with an altitude of some 4,000 feet. Len, his son- in-law, Joe Minckey from Gainesville, and some nephews, were hunting the two week rifle still-hunt season, with the second week open to bear. It was a clear evening, as Len was sitting on the ground halfway up the mountainside. The fellows were connected with two- way radios in case help was needed. Tem perature was around 30 degrees at 3 p.m., as they scanned the hillside looking for a nice deer. Len had his 25/06 with a 115 grain bullet ready. He picked up movement down the hill in some thick brush. Something black was moving through the brush. He figured it to be a dog. However, it was no dog as it headed up toward him. It was a black bear. Now, if I was sitting on the ground I would be a bit concerned, but Len said, with a rifle in his hand, he wasn’t wor ried. The bear came on up some forty yards to the side of where he was sitting. Len got the bear in his sights and fired. The bear rolled and tumbled down to where he had come from. Len waited for ten minutes or so, and not hearing any sound or seeing any movement in that direction, he headed that way. He found his bear up against a tree. Radioing his two nephews, they got on their four-wheelers and headed towards Len. It was a 185 lb. boar bear, with beautiful fur without fighting marks or scars. Len is going to have it mounted with a head and paw mount. Len said at the same check-in point at the game station, the ranger told of a 13-year-old girl’s experience with a bear. Seems she was up in a ladder- stand hunting. A black bear came towards where she was and be gan climbing up the actual ladder rungs of her stand. With a 285 lb. bear three feet from her, she fired, hit it in the head, and killed it. I would certainly like to meet that brave young lady. By the way, Len also took a sev en-point buck. In all, five bucks, one doe and one bear were taken by the group. I will tell you about Joe’s big buck next week. Let me know about your success in the outdoors.
