White, 81, of Lula, died Saturday, December 6, 2008, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville. Born in Banks County on November 25, 1927, he was the son of the late John J. and Myra Phillips White. He was a farmer and enjoyed fishing. He was a member, chairman of the board of deacons, and associate pastor of Rock Springs Baptist Church. Rev. White was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Ruth Crisp White; a brother, Buster White; and two grandchildren. Survivors include a son, Johnny White, Lula; daughters and sons- in-law, Carolyn and Terry Mote, Lula, Brenda and Daniel Webb, Dawsonville, Joan and Kennith Cochran, Commerce, Peggy and Hoyt Lovell, Gillsville, and Delores and Tony Goss, Clarkesville; brothers, Doyle White, Lula, and Jewell White, Alto; sisters, Mae Smith, Ethleen Hooper, both of Lula, Francine Westbrook, Baldwin, Betty Jo Tjepkema, Oakwood, and Joyce Shubert, Alto; 14 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. Born in Banks County, he grew up in Commerce, and was the son of the late William L. and Susan K. Barber. Mr. Barber was preceded in death by his wife, Janette McGarity Barber; sisters, Marian Barber and Kathryn B. Gaultney; and broth ers, William Ralph Barber and Dwight F. Barber. He attended Georgia Institute of Technology and was a veteran, having served in the United States Army during World War II. Mr. Barber served in the Georgia Legislature from 1949 to 1973 as a representative from Jackson County Public Television in Georgia, the Fembank Science Center and educational bills were among his major focus while serving in Atlanta. He served as Mayor of Commerce, Chairman of the State Committee on Education, President of Georgia School Board Association, President of Commerce Kiwanis Club, Chairman of the Board of Commerce First Methodist Church, Chairman of Jackson- Commerce Hospital Authority, President of Chamber of Commerce, Chairman of the Georgia Committee on Children andYouth, Governor's Conference on Education and Jackson-Banks Chapter American Red Cross. He was elected to five terms on the Georgia Public Service Commission where he served as Chairman. He was recognized by the Georgia Legislature for his efforts in protecting the rights of the consumer. Such organizations as the Georgia Association of Education, Georgia Science and Technology Commission, Emory University's Kappa Phi Kappa Literary Society and the National Association of Retired People have recognized him as an advo cate for the elderly, the children and the poor. He championed the extension of free telephone ser vice across north Georgia. Barber was honored for his accomplishments by the University of Georgia, Emory University, Georgia Association of Educators, Georgia Youth Council, National Association of Retired People and the Georgia PTA. Survivors include a niece, Angela G. Adams (Mrs. V. James Jr.), Macon; great-nephew, James Adams III, Macon; great-niece, Kathryn A. Brooks, Macon. Memorial services will be held Friday, December 12, at 2 p.m., at the Commerce First United Methodist Church with the Revs. Hoyt A. Allen and David G. Bowen officiating. 'J.B/ Bonds James Brooks “J.B.” Bonds, 82, of Lula, died Sunday, December 7, 2008, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, following a brief illness. Born in Banks County on January 3, 1926, he was the son of the late Warren and Maggie Brock Bonds. He was retired from Warren Featherbone as a pattern maker with 35 years of dedicated service. He was Holiness and enjoyed the outdoors. Mr. Bonds was preceded in death by his wife, Edith Meeks Bonds; broth ers, Charlie and Myles Bonds; and a sister, Grace Davidson. Born on November 9, 1928, in Anderson, S.C., he was the son of the late Russ Lee and Dossie Ivie Tanksley. He was retired from J.P. Stephens as a supervisor with 26 years of service and was Baptist. He was a veteran, having served in the United States Air Force. Survivors include his wife, Clara Shirley Tanksley, Alto; sis ter, Evelyn Janies, Seneca, S.C.; sister-in-law, Bertha Shirley, Alto. Born in White County on April 2, 1947, she was the daughter of Snow Dorsey Cooley of Alto the late J.W. “Willie” Gerrell. She was a homemaker and was Baptist. Mrs. Nix was preced ed in death by a sister, Kathy Gerrell; and step-father, Janies Arthur Cooley. She enjoyed fish ing, playing cards and spending time with her family, loved ones stated. Survivors in addition to her mother include her husband, Jerry G. Nix, Alto; daughter and son-in-law, Pamela and Dwayne Allen, Alto; sons and daugh- ter-in-law, Luke and Connie Cochran and Danny Cochran, all of Cornelia; seven step-children; brothers, Billy Wayne Gerrell, Royston, Haskell and Neal Gerrell, both of Cornelia; sister, Brenda Arrowood, Cornelia; five grandchildren, Trent and Brent Nix, Kayla, Chelsey and Brooke Cochran. 'Did' Echols Lee "Did” Echols, 86, of Lula, died Tuesday, December 2, at his residence. Born on May 3, 1922, in Hall County, he was the son of the late Richard L. and Ida Simmons Echols. He was retired from Toccoa Foundry Steel Manufacturing as general man ager for 40 years, and was a vet eran, having served in the United States Army. Mr. Echols was preceded in death by his wife, Bonnie Pierce Echols. Survivors include a daugh ter and son-in-law, Kathy and Larry Smith, Gainesville; sons and daughter-in-law, Sam and Joyce Echols and Dale Echols, all of Lula; sister, Faye Keheley, Atlanta; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Born in Banks County on February 8, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Emory and Minnie Brady Lawrence and was a 1943 graduate of Baldwin High School. She was a member of the Level Grove Baptist Church and the Willing Workers Sunday School Class, and was a home maker. Mrs. Meeks was preced ed in death by a sister, Florine Lawrence; and a brother, Buford Smith. Survivors include her husband, W.C. “Bill” Meeks, Cornelia; daughter and son-in-law, Gail and Bill Raper, Alto; son and daugh ter-in-law, Calvin and Vickie Meeks, Easley, S.C.; brother and sister-in-law, Janies and Monteen Lawrence, Gainesville; five grandchildren; and five great grandchildren. Bom in Macon County, N.C., on May 29, 1941, she was the daughter of the late Charles Tindell and May Bell Alexander Ledford. She was retired from Mt. Vernon Mills with over 30 years of dedicated service and was Baptist. Mrs. Justus was pre ceded in death by a sister, Barbara Sue Ramey; and a brother, Doyle Ledford. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Christy Lynn and Keith Williams, Alto; son, Richard Allen Justus, Clayton; brothers and sisters-in-law, Larry and Helen Ledford, Toccoa, and Charles and Linda Ledford, Franklin, N.C.; grandchildren, Misty Tolle, Noel Herron, Buster Justus, Ashley Pollard, Keaton Williams, Taylor Williams and Hailey Williams; and four great grandchildren. Born on June 7, 1942, in Shawnee, Okla., she was the daughter of the late James William Wingett Sr. and Mildred Olivia Clifton Wingett. She was a wait ress at the Iron Skillet Restaurant at the Petro Track Center and was Baptist. Mrs. Jones was preceded in death by a brother, Johnny Lee Wingett. Survivors include her husband, Andrew Dwayne “Andy” Jones; a son. Born in Banks County on August 30, 1939, he was the son of the late Otha and Monteen Ausburn Brady. He was employed in the manufacturing industry and enjoyed collecting antiques. Mr. Brady was preceded in death by his first wife, Doris Brady. Survivors include a daugh ter and son-in-law, Tammy and Richard Burton, Toccoa; sons and daughters-in-law, Tony Brady, Ken and Sandy Brady, and Randy Brady, all of Toccoa; brother, Keith Brady, Greenville, S.C.; five grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
