PAGE 8A THE BANKS COUNTY NEWS THURSDAY, DECEMBER 18, 2008 School ft ’ ART CONTEST WINNERS Winners for the Save the Earth Art Contest sponsored by R&B Landfill and Waste Management were awarded at Banks County Elementary School on Thursday De cember 4. Students were asked to draw a picture suggesting ideas and actions that the student can take to increase awareness and protect our environment. Art teacher Katie Harrison taught the students the importance of recycling and reusing to save natural resources. Students in each grade received gift cards for first, second and third place winners. First place received a $50 gift card. First place winners were: WilverCatarino, third grade; Mayben Alexander, fourth grade; and Hannah Poole, fifth grade. Second place winners received a $25 gift card. Second place winners were: Gloria Jeong, third grade; Nathan Wagner, fourth grade; and Mckensie Simpson, fifth grade. Third place winners received a $15 gift card. Winners were: Ty Davis, third grade; Kendra Stephens, fourth grade; and Colton Carter, fifth grade. Jackson EMC scholarship offered Jackson Electric Member ship Corporation (EMC) is taking applications for three scholarship awards based on academic ability, faculty rec ommendations and financial need. Winners will be chosen by a scholarship committee, which will carefully review each application for the most qualified candidates. The Walter Harrison Schol arship is named for a leader in the state and national electric cooperative movements. Sever al of these $1,000 scholarships are awarded statewide to under graduate students enrolled in or accepted by a Georgia college, university or technical school. Jackson EMC also offers two additional $1,000 awards through the A.T. Sharpton Scholarship program, named in honor of a late chairman of the Jackson EMC Board of Directors. The A.T. Sharpton- Gainesville State College Award is available exclusively to students planning to attend Gainesville State College. Fi nancial need is a primary con sideration, but judges will also consider academic average, standardized test scores and/or faculty recommendations. The A.T. Sharpton Unre stricted Scholarship Award is funded through the same trust and is available to high school seniors who have already been accepted to college, or students who are currently enrolled in an accredited college, univer sity or technical college. Appli cants may be full or part-time students at the undergraduate or graduate level in any accred ited two or four-year college or university in the nation. Finan cial need, academic average, standardized test scores and/or faculty recommendations are all considered by the judges. Scholarship recipients must be a customer of Jackson EMC or the son or daughter of a cus tomer, and they must also be a resident of the home served by Jackson EMC. Students interested in ap plying for any or all of these scholarships should contact their area high-school guidance counselors or complete the ap plication online at the Jackson EMC Web site. R&B Landfill donates ipods Rob Moffett, guidance coun selor at the Banks County Middle school, has put together an atten dance program for the students to encourage perfect attendance. He wants to instill in the students the importance of good attendance and hopefully make it a habit in all that they do. The attendance program in cludes a drawing at the end of each nine weeks for the students to be rewarded for their perfect attendance. The grand prize for the nine week drawing will be an iPod donated by R&B Landfill and Waste Management. Moffett stated, ‘The attendance program was very successful last year as 99 percent of all of our students were under the state’s 15-day limit, which was a new record.
