MAYSVILLE
Program offers
Sunday meal
with a message
Two large churches in the Maysville com
munity have announced the formation of a joint
Sunday fellowship and meal ministry to serve
the Banks and Jackson County areas.
The ministry will be located in the activities
hall of the old Maysville Baptist Church facili
ties on Homer Road in Maysville and is avail
able to all of those in the area who would enjoy
a traditional Sunday dinner while visiting with
others of like interests.
The pastors and staffs of the two churches,
Maysville Baptist and Grove Level Baptist, have
both long desired to expand their outreach min
istries in the local community while continuing
to support their other local, national and interna
tional outreach programs. The idea of a jointly
sponsored ministry and the ready availability of
suitable local facilities provided the bases on
which to proceed with plans for an expanded
local outreach ministry for both church groups.
The longer range plans for the ministry include
the formation of a food pantry, a clothing pan
try, education support, personal counseling and
other possible services for which a need is
identified. The Sunday noon meal program will
provide the opportunity to initially organize and
establish the ministry in a relatively short period
of time, leaders report.
“Participation with other churches and family
support groups would be welcomed,” organiz
ers state.

Fasting will
come with
rewards
I turned on the television
Sunday morning while
getting ready for church.
I saw the Rev. Jentezen
Franklin standing in a
desert type setting, talk
ing about fast
ing. After a few
minutes, I real
ized that he was
in the Holy Land
near the place
where Jesus
Christ sought the
Father during his
40 day fast.
I was some
what amazed
at what I heard.
Free Chapel,
the mega church in
Gainesville, is completely
debt free. He was quick to
attribute that to wisdom he
had gained from God as he
sought him during a time
of fasting.
During a fast, most peo
ple give up certain foods
for a period of time, while
others may turn off the
television or the computer.
Whatever God calls us
to do, we need to under
stand one vitally important
fact. If we are not seeking
God’s face through prayer
and the Word, we are not
truly fasting.
I saw the hand of God
move in my life as well. I
had a major situation star
ring me in the face, and
I had no control. I began
to seek God because I
needed his help to endure.
During my fast, the situ
ation became less impor
tant, and God became
more important to me. I
quickly learned that while
I couldn’t change the situ
ation, God was by my side
no matter what happened.
Yes, I grew closer to God,
but I must give him praise
because he worked out
my situation, and it was
miraculous!
Fasting is not to bribe
God, but it will get our
fleshly desires out of the
way. We will come to real
ize that his will and his
ways are most important
to us. Bringing our body
into subjection will help us
realize just how important
God is to our everyday
existence.
There are many exam
ples of fasting in scrip
ture. In Matthew 4, Jesus
was on his 40 day fast
before he start
ed his earthly
ministry. He
was tempted
by the devil
three times and
remained victo
rious. It can be
true in our lives
as well. As we
grow closer
to the Father
through fast
ing, we will be
victorious over the temp
tations which come our
way.
In Acts 13:1-3, we find
a group of prophets and
teachers who were wor
shipping the Lord and
fasting when the Holy
Spirit said, “Set apart for
me Barnabas and Saul for
the work to which I have
called them.” I’m sure
there are individuals who
are seeking God’s will for
their lives: fasting will
bring about revelation.
In 2 Chronicles 20, King
Jehoshaphat heard that the
surrounding kingdoms had
declared war on his king
dom and he gave orders
that “everyone through
out Judah should observe
a fast.” The people were
obedient and they were
delivered from the hands
of their enemies. Fasting
will bring deliverance.
Most importantly, fast
ing will bring us closer to
God. While fasting may
be a difficult thing to do; it
is one of the most reward
ing things in a Christian’s
life. It can bring about the
change we have been seek
ing for years, if we are
willing to make the sac
rifice.
