Our family, along with lots of other fam
ilies, enjoyed attending the Banks County
High School football banquet held at the
Grove on Sunday afternoon. Coach Phil
lip Jones and the coaching staff did a great
job, along with the mother huddle and ev
eryone else that had a part in making this
a special day for our football players. We
are looking for another great season next
year. Our prayers are with the seniors who
will be leaving the progam this year, but
we know they are leaving our football
team in good hands with the group of great
underclassmen ready to take over. We are
proud of our Leopards.

happy birthday and lots of more to come.
Everyone had a great time.
Marshell and Rhonda Parson Trisha and
Taylor ( Lilly and Holly), along with Chris
and Jill Smithe Allison and Chloe and San
dra and Melina Garrison all enjoyed ring
ing in the new year together in a cabin in
Pigeon Forge, Tenn. They had lots of fun
and games and lots of great food. The girls
came back excited about basketball sea
son. Good luck, girls.
I’m so glad to report that Cpl. Dustin
Holcombe has returned from Afghani
stan! He returned to Camp Lejeune on
Jan. 4 and got to come “home” on Jan.
5. His dad, sister Harlee and I have had
a wonderful, but all too short visit. We
are so blessed to have him home. He will
return to Camp Lejeune to finish out his
four years and then he will be getting out
of the Marine Corps on June 9. We are so
proud of Dustin and would like to thank
everyone for their continued support and
prayers as his adventure through life con
tinues. Thank you for keeping up with all
of our military and keeping us informed
of where each of them are and how they
are doing. Its always good to hear from a
family who’s love one has returned home
safe.

The community was saddened to hear
of the death of Duran Bellotte. He was the
son of Herbert and Shelby Bellotte, father
of Olivia Jade Bellotte, brother of Ginger
Grindle, uncle to Sydney and Shelby Grin-
dle, nephew, cousin and friend to many
in our community. He was a very loving
young man and he will be greatly missed
by all who knew him. Remember his fam
ily and friends when you pray.

The prayer list includes many in our
community who have cancer. Please re
member them and all of the others who are
sick and in need of our prayers.

There are natural disasters
and disastrous occurrences we
may experience in our lifetime.
To be more specific. Banks
County residents could expe
rience damaging winds from
tornadoes or hurricanes. From
forest fires to flooding rains to
crippling ice and snow storms,
damages and losses to homes,
businesses, property,
crops, and livestock
can produce tragic
results.
Although we may
have to experience
one or more of these
disasters in our life
time, we do have
public services, such
as the Banks County
Emergency Manage
ment Agency, Fire
Department, Emer
gency Services, Health Depart
ment and others who are pre
pared to protect and rescue us
from the effects of these disas
ters. Since they are trained more
for protecting our lives and
property, there is a concern for
preparing for agricultural emer
gencies or disasters. That could
be anything from livestock loose
on the roads, livestock endan
gered from tornadoes or hurri
cane winds, flooding, compan
ion and service animals needing
care as the result of a disaster,
livestock infected with a foreign
animal disease outbreak, or even
agroterrorism.
The Banks County Extension
Office is working together with
the Banks County EMA and
emergency services to form a
group of citizens and emergency
responders who will volunteer
their time to assist in providing
some type of help whenever an
agricultural emergency occurs.
The most common version of
this team effort is called the
County Agricultural Response
Team, or CART.
The CART’s efforts will in
clude specific phases of emer
gency management, such as
preparedness, re
sponse, and recovery.
Besides the EMA
Director, Emergency
Services responders,
and the extension
agent, some candi
dates for joining the
CART will be live
stock and poultry
producers, veteri
narians, volunteers,
health department,
law enforcement, and
local officials. Volunteers will
need to go through some ba
sic training to become familiar
with the Incident Management
Systems emergency prepared
ness trainings. The CART will
need some members to com
mit to using their equipment to
help catch, contain, and haul
livestock to safe locations. And,
there is a need for stalls, pens,
or paddocks to hold livestock
temporarily until they can be re
turned to their home safely.
If you are interested in join
ing the CART, either to physi
cally assist in an emergency sit
uation or to provide equipment
or bam/pasture space, give us
a call at the extension office at
706-677-6230 or email at bwal-
dorf@uga.edu.

County extension agent.
