was in the path of the library
expansion.
“The only path to expan
sion ran right through the
Wallace Nelson Memorial
Garden,” she said.
She noted that the unique
library benches are the result
of a discovery by board
members Nicky Wilbanks
and Ann Rhoads, who found
similar benches — seemingly
propped up by granite rep
licas of various books — at
a library in Camden, Maine.
Mike Jones of Athens cus
tom-built them for the Com
merce library.
Wilbanks pointed out that
one of the benches — featur
ing Jackson County authors’
books — was donated by the
family of the late Julia Jones,
a longtime library supporter
and Commerce High School
English teacher.
“Every time 1 look at that
bench, I will remember Mrs.
Jones’ senior English class,”
she remarked.
Wilbanks encouraged the
audience to look at the list
of Georgia and local authors
and “find a book that interests
you and start reading.”
Rhoads thanked the
donors who helped fund
the expansion, and said the
board’s top priority has been
to have a facility that is “friend
ly and inviting.”
“We’re thrilled,” she said.
She also pointed out that
the dedication took place
during National Library Week.
“Today is a bookend to
the project that started so
long ago,” Rhoads said. “It is
officially finished, but we’ve
thought of more things we
want to do.”
