Follow through with commitments
What have I gotten myself
into? That was my thought last
week as I began to put the
finishing touches on a baby
shower I had planned for my
son Zach and his wife, Casey.
Don’t get me wrong. I love the
thought of doing it; I just lack
some of the expertise required
for such an event.
Trying to plan, prepare, dec
orate, and host are a tall order
for me. It could have been me
against the world, but thank
God for the dependable folks I
have in my life. Some made a commitment
to help months ago, and some just showed
up on the spot.
In the end, I had a group of dedicated
family and friends who came together
to help me do every single thing. Some
showed up early because they “new I
would need help.” Others stayed late to
lend a hand to get everything cleaned and
packed up. Then there were many others
who showed up to support the honorees.
I had a couple of folks in the 80’s club who
went out of their way to be sure some of
the people who are most important to us
had a ride.
As I thought about this group of folks,
many who have one common denomina
tor....me and a love of the Lord. I realized it
was their dedication that helped the show
er to come together perfectly.
I didn’t worry if my volunteers would be
there, I knew I could depend on them. I
knew the Lord would take care of the rest.
Keeping our word is so important to liv
ing a dedicated life to the Lord. While we
are not perfect, may we strive to be men
and women of our word.
Jesus talked about commitment and
down right lying in Matthew 5. He con
cluded with, “Let your yes be yes and your
no, no.”
Today I wonder if many people realize
the implications of giving our word and not
following through with it. Now there will
be times when something gets in the way,
such as a sickness or an unforeseen cir
cumstance. I know God knows our hearts
in all situations.
I must confess I made a commitment a
few years back and my lack of
action has haunted me. It has
given me a new determination
to do what I say I will do. It’s
not always easy, but it is the
right thing to do.I said I would
attend a wedding and at the last
minute I decided not to go. It
wasn’t a sickness. It wasn’t an
emergency. I just decided to do
something else. It was a couple
of hours from my home and
Chris was out of town. Still, I
knew all of that when I said I
would attend and later changed
my mind.
There are some implications at times.
Breaking a commitment can hinder a rela
tionship. Think about it. When we give our
word and dornt follow through, we may
lose credibility with people.
At the moment it may be easier to say yes
rather than having to explain our no. The
event may be so far in the future, we don’t
really worry about it.
Let’s rethink that one. Time literally flies!
Our commitments are due in a hop, skip,
and a jump.
While the commitment may seem insig
nificant to us, we need to remember the sig
nificance to the other person. As we desire
to live a Christ-like life, may we remember
that the Lord always keeps His word.
James 1:19 reminds us to be slow to
speak. When we speak in all circumstanc
es let us be careful of our words. Do we
want to be known as someone who is
dependable? Absolutely!
Both of these have been learning expe
riences. I have learned the importance of
keeping my word. I don’t want to live with
regret. Also, I’ve learned to think my yays
through very carefully. I’ve also learned
how blessed I am to have people in my life
who support me no matter what. Lord help
me to be a dependable person.
My prayer is that each of us will think
before we start agreeing to doing all man
ner of things, and be sure we can follow
through with them. May we desire to live
more like Christ in every single way.
