Culinary adventure in Banner Elk, N.C.
Banner Elk has long been
known for its outdoor adven
ture and amazing scenic
views, but the North Carolina
mountain town is now mak
ing a name in the culinary
world.
A brisket salad, fried dev
iled eggs, an Italian salad,
lemon caper trout and a
breakfast casserole of eggs,
French toast and sausage are
just a few of the amazing
dishes I had on a visit to the
charming mountain town.
BAYOU SMOKEHOUSE
My first meal in Banner Elk
was at Bayou Smokehouse
and it was a great start to my
culinary adventure. I chose
Bob’s King Ranch Salad and
was not disappointed. Slices
of Texas-style Smoked Beef
Brisket BBQ is served over
mixed field greens with red
tomato, onion, cucumber,
broccoli, mushrooms and
grated cheese. The salad is
garnished with house-made
red salsa and tortilla chips.
So many wonderful flavors
that compliment each other.
Bayou Smokehouse, locat
ed in the center of the Village
Shops in downtown Banner
Elk, is open for lunch and
dinner seven days a week.
Free lawn games on the
deck-side courtyard, dog
friendly and free wifi are
offered.
Menu options include
salads, quesadillas, burgers,
sandwiches, pasta, trout, ribs
and steak, as well as Cajun
cooking, including jamba-
laya and etouffee.
CHEF’S TABLE
Dinner at Chefs Table
offers an amazing menu fea
turing local farms. 1 started
with a beet salad and then
had the wonderful North
Carolina Rainbow trout
served with lemon caper
butter served with asparagus.
Sushi is also on the menu
which makes for a nice
option.
DUNN’S DELI
At Dunn’s Deli, the Dennis
R is a great breakfast bowl to
start your day with. It has two
scrambled eggs topped with
a sausage patty and a slice
of French toast diced and
covered with grated cheese,
served with syrup.
SORRENTO’S BISTRO
Sorrento’s offers tradi
tional Italian dishes using
third-generation recipes. The
Italian salad is a meal in itself
but I suggest you also get the
delicious Tortellini Sorren
to made with cream sauce
with prosciutto served with
sauteed vegetables. The crab
cakes are the best I’ve ever
had with lots of flaky crab
meat.
STONEWALLS
Stonewalls Restaurant
has been in the town for
30 years but a new owner
has brought some great offer
ings to the menu. The fried
deviled eggs with candied
bacon and fried green toma
toes with pimento cheese
and tomato jam are so good
that you have to order both.
Steak choices are center cut
sirloin, New York strip, ribeye
and filet mignon.
While there are some
great new additions to the
menu, you will still find the
slow-roasted prime rib and
the salad bar with more than
50 items.
BANNER ELK CAFE
Banner Elk Cafe has some
great lunch and dinner
options but I made a stop for
breakfast where the waffles
and fresh fruit were a great
choice.
BANNER ELK WINERY
Sangria, both red and
white with the red having
watermelon and jalepenos
in it. Delicious. The sangria
is the top seller at the winery
and is offered year-round. It
was a summer drink at first
but became so popular that
it was added to the menu
year-round.
LOTS TO DO
In between your culinary
tour through Banner Elk, a
few things to include on your
trip includes: catch a pro
duction at the Lees-McRae
Summer Theatre (“Legally
Blonde” through Aug. 4) and
Ensemble Stage (“Switzer
land” through Aug. 6); take a
tour at Apple Hill Farm where
you will get an up-close visit
with alpacas, llama, goats,
horses and other animals;
Beech Mountain (where you
can take a scenic chair lift
ride to the top of the moun
tain and relax at the 5506’
Skybar); Wildlife Rehabil
itation Center and Wildcat
Lake (swimming, fishing and
boating).
Bed and breakfast inns,
condos and chalets are
found throughout Banner
Elk. We stayed at Best West
ern Lodge, 1615 Tynecastle
Hwy., which is a budget
friendly choice in a great
location.
