Late blight on tomatoes
Late blight on tomatoes is a disease
not often seen in Georgia. It has been
several years since it has been confirmed
in the north half of the state. However,
with the hot weather and frequent rains,
it is possible for a widespread infection to
occur in this area. Late blight is a “water
mold” and spreads rapidly in mild, wet
weather where it can kill entire plants in a
few days. Once the weather turns hot and
dry the disease will dry up.
The symptoms of late blight are unique
compared to other foliar tomato diseases
such as early blight or bacterial spot. Instead of defined leaf
spots, the leaves look “blighted” with dark, limp, irregular
shaped blotches, often starting from the edge. Dark brown
streaks or blotches also appear on the petioles, stems, and
fruit. When conditions are humid, tiny, white spores can be
observed on the undersides of the leaves and on the stem
lesions.
Unlike other tomato diseases, the late blight organisms do
not survive on dead plant parts and may not readily survive
from year to year in Georgia. The source of the disease may
be from transplants, so using clean transplants is important.
The same fungicides used to prevent other foliar diseases will
have some effect on late blight. For organic growers, coppers
are probably the most effective product. Other preventative
measures you can take to prevent tomato blight are to keep
your plants as dry as possible, and to remove and destroy any
plant parts showing signs of disease. This means irrigating
plants in the evening or late night so the plants have time to dry
out during the daytime. Also, when removing diseased plant
parts, be sure to throw them in the trash or haul them far away
from your garden.
Since we are in the middle of the hurricane season and the
possibility of daily afternoon rain showers, the disease has
the potential to spread over a wide distance if preventative
measures are not taken. UGA Extension Plant Pathology Spe
cialists are interested in tracking any additional outbreaks and
would appreciate any reports of potential late blight. Photos
and more information on late blight can be found at this link:
blight_tomato.htm].
If you suspect late blight on your tomato plants, call or
email me at the Banks County Extension office at 706-677-6230
or bwaldorf@uga.edu. Once we can examine the infected
plant(s) and look at the infected tissue under the microscope,
we can determine if it is a possible case of late blight. It can
then be sent to the Extension Plant Pathologist, Dr. Elizabeth
Little, where we can get a confirmed positive or negative diag
nosis.
