THE BANKS COUNTY NEWS
WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 9, 2017
Hart... Cont. from IB
His coaching career started at Franklin
County in 2015. In two seasons as an assistant
coach, Franklin County went 50-10, winning
two region championships and making an
appearance in the Elite Eight.
This past season, Hart was a volunteer
coach at Emmanuel College, where the
team finished fourth at the Christian College
World Series in Ohio. He also coached three
travel-ball teams. He also knew head boys’
basketball coach Mike Cleveland and under
stands the “culture” that is being built at Banks
County, he added.
“That’s very attractive for me to add onto
that and to take the baseball program into the
direction that I think everybody wants to see it
go,” Hart said. “So, I’m super excited.
“There’s a lot of good stuff going on here.”
The Leopards made it to the second
round of the Class AA state playoffs last
season. Eight seniors graduated from last
year’s team.
“Thankful for what they did for the pro
gram,” Hart said. “But, I’m excited to get in
here and work with these young guys and
continue on what coach Kelley left.
“You can’t leave out the parents, either, for
this program. They’ve poured a lot of time
and work into the program and into the facil
ities. I’ve coached in college. I’ve coached
in high school. I’ve seen a lot of fields and
this is by far the nicest one. This is the nicest
facility in northeast Georgia. For us to have
that, I think that’s a huge advantage for us.
I’m excited. I’m just ready to get to work. I’m
ready to work with them.”
PASSING ON EXPERIENCE

Football... Cont. from IB
Takeaways from the
game, Shoemaker called
it a typical scrimmage with
“first-time-in-pads-type
mistakes” that they will
clear up and correct.
“I didn’t expect it to be
that rough,” he said. “I
knew it was going to be
tough but we just didn’t
play very well.”
Shoemaker said this
week will be about get
ting the team into “game
shape,” the effort and
tempo of practice up, as
well.
“We’re going to start
going at a different speed
to get our conditioning,
because there were some
kids that were tired at the
half,” he explained. “Now,
that’s good. That means
they’re playing hard, but
they’ve got a whole other
half to go.
“So, we’re going to
concentrate on our game
speed, our conditioning
and our tackling. We’ll
probably take a couple of
days off from the general
‘X’s’ and ‘O’s’ because we
know where we’re going.
We’ve just got to learn how
to get there and get men
tally tougher.”
The backup players
scored the Leopards’ lone
touchdown against Haber
sham Central.
“I was proud of the
young guys,” Shoemak
er said. “The young guys
scored. I told them their
score kept us from getting
shut out.
“They didn’t look too
bad. Now, you could see
it in their faces, a little bit
of game shock. But, I told
them before the game, I
said, ‘Soak all of this in. It’s
fun.’ We brought a good
crowd. Hab had a great
crowd. It was a great Friday
night atmosphere. So, they
didn’t do bad at all. We’ve
just got to clean them up.
People don’t realize how
big of a shock that is for
a kid that has never been
on the field, and then put
them on a nice new turf
field in front of all those
people and just start yell
ing at them, officials and
all of that.”

BCPRD... Cont. from IB
more diversity into that.”
Whitmire credited the BCPRD staff,
Chase Carter and Kim McEntire, with
brainstorming for more sports to intro
duce to the community.
Whitmire said all the youth summer
camps were “greatly successful” for 2017.
“We’re really appreciative to have all of
the coaches from the varsity and (junior
varsity) levels,” she said. “They’re always
helpful with us.
“Like, coach (Mike) Cleveland comes
in and he actually coaches the basket
ball camp. We have great backing there.”
Another aspect Whitmire sees blos
soming with the youth camps is camp
ers are growing up as Banks County
Leopards.
“So, it’s not just them going out there
and ‘I just played football,”’ she said,
“it’s ‘I’ve been introduced to the high
school football coach. I’m a little Leop
ard. When I grow up, I want to be a
Leopard.’
“So, it’s that community feeling and
the sense of family that we like to build
in those areas.”
Not only did coaches help throughout
the summer but so too did players from
various sports including the week of fun
camp, which isn’t sports-focused camp.
Instead, campers engaged in other activ
ities such as dodgeball, tie-dying shirts
and more.
“To be in a community like that, where
we’re able to do something like that, was
really awesome,” Whitmire explained.
“Those kids at fun camp just had the
absolute best time, hanging out with the
high-schoolers. So, it was awesome.”
At the end of a season or camp, Whit
mire said the team goes back to look at
what they’ve done. Then, it takes input
to find ways to make it better the follow
ing year. One thing not messed with, the
timing of camps.
“People may have noticed over the
year that boys’ basketball camp always
comes first. Then, football camp and so
on and so forth,” Whitmire said. “We try
and keep them around the same weeks,
so, that way parents can plan, kind of
gauge, if they need to plan travel or other
things around that.”
The next event for the BCPRD is the
second annual Spooktacular Sprint 5K.
The event takes place at the Windmill
Sports Complex, 607 Thompson St.,
Homer, on Saturday Oct. 14, from 6-9
p.m. The fun run begins at 7 p.m. and 5K
begins at 7:30 p.m.
