Know the word of God and
keep it close to your heart
It often
amazes me
about who or
what God uses
to get our atten
tion. Recently,
I was on the
back roads of
South Georgia
when I hap
pened upon
a little gospel
radio station.
The host was
talking about
local children making guest
appearances to read the
Word. Each child who com
pleted the task gets a Bible.
I was intrigued by the idea
and began to think about it,
when suddenly an upcom
ing third grade fellow start
ed belting out Proverbs 3.
Now I love Proverbs and I
hold verses five and six near
and dear to my heart. On
this particular day, as I noted
the voice inflection of this
young fellow, every single
word of that chapter jumped
out at me. I was thrilled to
hear the promises of God
come alive to me once
more because of a grand
mother bringing her pride
and joy to the radio station
to read and take home the
Word of God.
How many of us grew
up in church? Surely we
learned all about the mercy,
grace, and glory of God. We
colored pictures of Noah
and the Ark as we read of
God’s great promise. We
learned about Daniel and
how he refused to go the
way of the world. Then we
read of Daniel in the lion’s
den, and how he prevailed
because of God. That is the
same God we serve today.
My question is, “Do we hold
on to the Word of God?”
Do we cling to his promis
es or do we compromise
with the world?” We know
better. We’ve learned bet
ter, but our light sometimes
grows dim because of the
weight of the world. May
Proverbs 3 wake us up and
remind us that God is the
only way to know true hap
piness and contentment on
this earth, and Jesus is the
only way to eter
nal life.
We are remind
ed in verse one:
“My son, do not
forget my teach
ing, but keep my
commandments
in your heart.”
Think about it.
If we live accord
ing to the word we
will not get entan
gled in the evil in
the world. We will
not suffer the adverse effects
of addiction. If we remem
ber what we have learned
in God’s word, we will
not suffer the consequenc
es of ungodliness. I am not
saying we are headed down
a complete yellow brick
road, but we will always be
victorious because of Christ
Jesus. Plus, we don’t have to
be anxious. We don’t have
to be afraid. We know if
God is for us, who can be
against us.
Wait, there are promises
associated with living our
lives according to this verse.
“For they will prolong your
life many years and bring
you peace and prosperity.”
If I could poll everyone I
come in contact with today,
I’m sure they would tell me
they want peace and pros
perity in their lives. Right
here in God’s word, we are
given the formula to have it,
not to mention a long life to
serve Almighty God.
Verses 34 remind us to
keep love and faithfulness.
We are to bind them around
our neck; we are to write
them on the tablet of our
hearts. In other words,
know the word of God; keep
it close to your heart.
When we do these things
we are promised favor and
a good name in the sight
of God and man. Do you
pray for favor? I have spent
years praying for my chil
dren to have favor. I’ve even
asked for favor among my
bosses, my colleagues, and
of course, favor with God.
Right before us is the for
mula to have favor with God
and man.
Let’s end with the verses
that are so familiar to us.
“Trust in the Lord with all
your heart and lean not on
your own understanding;
in all ways acknowledge
him and he will direct your
path.” Again, I could take
a poll and I know we want
God to direct our paths. It’s
possible.
Let us lay down our plans
and ideas of the kind of
life we are going to live. Let
us begin to tmst God when
doors open that we never
expected. May we trust
God when another door is
closed up tight. God knows
what is best for us. We see
today. He sees our lives
from beginning to end. He
knows the consequences,
good or bad, if we choose
our direction. Please know
he can be tmsted with every
area of our lives. His path
will always be the right way.
I’m telling you, Proverbs 3
is full of golden nuggets. I’ve
barely touched the surface.
Grab your Bible. Get your
computer or telephone.
Find a way back to Proverbs
3, and let God speak to your
heart and change your life
through the reading of HIS
mighty word.
