Burn ban in effect
through September
The Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD) pro
hibits burning through September in 54 area counties in order
to reduce pollutants that create ground-level ozone.
The burn ban is an important part of the EPD’s plan to
improve air quality during smog season.
Why is the burn ban needed?
In Atlanta, during the summer months, the ozone in the air
can reach unhealthy levels.
“Ozone is formed when volatile organic compounds and
nitrogen oxides coming from manmade and natural sources
react in the presence of sunlight.
“A major source of these pollutants is the burning of fuels
and other combustible materials. The Georgia EPD has identi
fied open burning as a significant contributor of the pollutants
that form ozone.
“Therefore, open burning in metro Atlanta and the surround
ing areas must be restricted during the summer months.”
Where and when does the Burn Ban Apply?
The burn ban covers the 13 counties that comprise the
Atlanta Ozone Non-Attainment Area and 41 counties that
surround the local Ozone Non-attainment Area, which indues
Banks.
The burn ban is in effect in 54 counties from May 1 through
September 30 each year.
• burning over of forest land by the owners of the land, with
the following exception: prescribed burning of forest land is
allowed in the following 26 counties: Banks, Barrow, Butts,
Chattooga, Clarke, Dawson, Floyd, Gordon, Haralson, Heard,
Jackson, Jasper, Jones, Lamar, Lumpkin, Madison, Meriweth
er, Monroe, Morgan, Oconee, Pickens, Pike, Polk, Putnam,
Troup and Upson. Citizens can get more information on the
open burning ban by calling the area EPD District Office in
your area, the Northeast District Office, at 706-369-6376.
