Lula tables rezoning request for hatchery

The Lula City Council
voted last week to table a
request to rezone 23 acres
along Hwy. 365 and Belton
Bridge Road from Highway
Business to M-II Heavy In
dustrial following concerns
by the public and at the re
quest of the applicant.
The applicant, Elevation
Construction, has proposed
a 60,000 square foot hatch
ery to be located on the por
tion of the property adjacent
to Hwy. 365.
There is no indication of
the use of the remaining 20
acres.
Several citizens have is
sued concerns during two
public hearings, and the
applicant wants a chance to
address these issues before
the final vote.
Citizens have asked for
another public hearing be
fore the council readdresses
the request.
OTHER BUSINESS
In other business, the
council approved a budget
adjustment for $17,000 to
pay for the November elec
tion. District 1, 4, and 5 are
up for grabs. District 1
is
currently held by Tony Cor
nett; District 4 is currently
held by Garnett Smith, and
District 5 is currently va
cant.
Leaders also approved a
request for Dave Wilson to
use Carter Alley, between
Athens and Cobb Streets, to
allow vendors to set up and
sell merchandise on Satur
day evening, September 30.
In other business the
council discussed that:
•bidding is underway for
the culvert replacement for
Chattahoochee and Carter
Streets.
•the Lula Fall Festival
will be held on Saturday.

Mayor’s race set
in Maysville, Alto,
Baldwin on Nov. 7

When qualifying ended last week for the towns that have
elections coming up on Nov. 7, a mayor’s race was set in
Maysville, Alto and Baldwin.. Several council seats also
have opposition.
MAYSVILLE
In Maysville, incumbent mayor Richard Presley will
face challenger William S. McLeish Jr.
One council seat in Maysville will also be on the ballot.
In Ward 4, Brodriche D. Jackson and Roy Dean will face
off. In Ward 2, Amanda Farley was the only one to qualify.
Ward 2 and 4 incumbents, Junior Hardy and Scott Harper,
are not seeking re-election.
ALTO
In Alto, incumbent P.J. Huggins, Pattcia Gail Armour
and John Smith will be on the ballot in the mayor’s race.
In Post 2, incumbent James M. Turner was the only one
to qualify.
In Post, 4, incumbent Eddie Palmer was the only one to
qualify.
BALDWIN
In Baldwin, Stephanie Almagno and Tom Whitney are
seeking the mayor’s seat.
The mayor’s seat currently is held by acting mayor Alice
Venter and will be elected for the remainder of about two
years and one month, beginning around Dec. 1, 2023, and
run through Dec. 31, 2025. Venter serves as Post 5 Coun-
cilmember and will return to that seat once the new mayor
is installed.
In Baldwin, only one person qualified for each of the
council seats: Post 1, Erik Keith (incumbent; Post 2, Jo
seph Satterfield (incumbent Theron Ayers did not qualify);
Post 3 Kerri Dianne Davis (incumbent Stephanie Almagno
did not qualify)
HOMER
In Homer, a town election will not be needed since only
one person qualified for each seat.
Those to qualify were: Judy M. Harper, incumbent, Post
1; Stephen Parson, Post 2; and James Dumas, incumbent,
Post 3.
School Governance
Council to meet Sept. 12
Banks County Primary School will host its first Gover
nance Meeting of 2023-2024 on September 12.
Governance team members include: Dr. Mike Boyle,
principal; Annie Reece, teacher representative; Kim Moore,
teacher representative; Ashley Ramsey, parent representa
tive; Dr. Jessica Williams, parent representative; Brittany
Ryals, business representative/communify representative;
and Sydney Segars, business/community representative.
