Charles Collier "Charlie” Space Jr.
HOSCHTON — Charles Collier “Charlie”
Space Jr., 87, Hoschton, cherished husband of 65
wonderful years to Linda L. Space, passed away
on Friday, September 29, 2023.
He was predeceased
by his parents, Charles
C. Space Sr. and Jill H.
Space; and his brother.
He was a loving and
devoted father to Su
zanne S. Woodring, Co
lumbia, Tennessee, and
Steven D. Space (Bar
bara), Suwanee: and
beloved “Papa” to his
grandchildren, Riley H.
Space (Christi), Atlanta,
and Courtney S. McGuire (Thomas), Columbia,
South Carolina. He also leaves behind two sisters,
Nancy S. Mackey and Jill S. Peeples.
Charlie was a graduate of Landon High School
in Jacksonville, Florida, and a 1957 graduate of the
Georgia Institute of Technology with a degree in
Mechanical Engineering. He served as a consult
ing engineer for over 40 years.
His career was one that touched on many of the
fascinating events of the last half of the 20th cen
tury. Few engineers have been blessed with such
a diverse and exciting career that included major
projects and fascinating individuals that crossed
his path. Major projects included participation in
the design of the launch tower for the Saturn Moon
shots; design and construction of the underground
facilities for the development of Walt Disney
World; and strengthening of the defenses for the
Panama Canal following the Cuban Missle Crisis.
Funeral service: Saturday, October 7, 2023, at
2 p.m. at Hamilton Mill Christian Church, 3809
Sardis Church Road, Buford, Ga. 30519.

Douglas Neal Varner
Douglas Neal Vamer, 66, passed away at his
family home on Vamer Road, also the homeplace
of his father and grandfather, in the Bold Spring
community of Franklin County on Sunday, Octo
ber 1, 2023, following an extended illness.
Mr. Vamer was bom in Commerce on December
23, 1956, to the late W.T. and Jewell Vamer.
Doug is survived by his wife of 45 years, Renee
Simmons Vamer; three children, Jessica Vamer,
Cumming, Melanie and Damon Kepes, Cames-
ville, and Brandon and Jennifer Vamer, Cames-
ville; three granddaughters, Ella, Eva and Lydia,
Cumming; four siblings, Stan and Claudine Vamer,
Commerce, Sharon and Dave Tonge, Commerce,
Kathy Vamer, Duluth, and Dan Vamer, Commerce;
as well as many nieces and nephews.
Known affectionately as “Oldie” to his three
granddaughters, Doug was a carpenter, farmer,
loving father and grandfather who lived a life of
character, kindness and strength. He was also a
lifelong sports fan and outdoorsman.
He was a graduate of Banks County High School
in 1974, where he played baseball, basketball and
football. He continued to enjoy sports, especially
UGA football and the Atlanta Braves.
Doug was a skilled carpenter for over 20 years
and continued his career as a Jackson County Cor
rectional Officer supervising a mobile constmction
crew for 22 years. Doug willingly used his carpen
try skills to help others.
Mr. Vamer was a lifelong member of Bold Spring
United Methodist Church. He served on the main
tenance committee and as an usher for many years.
His favorite times were spent outdoors hunting
and fishing and at the many activities of his chil
dren and grandchildren. His resilient toughness in
the life he lived was evident in the family he raised
as a loving husband and father in the house he built
for them.
Funeral service: Wednesday, October 4, 2023, at
2:30 p.m. at Bold Spring United Methodist Church
with the Reverends Ross Wheeler and Dr. Dave
Tonge officiating. Burial will follow in the Bold
Spring United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Family to receive friends: Tuesday, October 3,
2023, from 5-8 p.m. at Little-Ward Funeral Home
in Commerce.
Flowers are accepted or make donations to your
local Special Olympics in honor of Doug’s love of
athletics and his children and grandchildren.
Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, is in
charge of arrangements.

Betty Carey West
Betty Carey West, 75, cherished mother, sister
and “Gran”, passed away peacefully on Wednes
day, October 4, 2023.
Bom in Athens, she was a daughter of the late
John Lafayette Carey and Norman Jean Carey.
Betty enjoyed sitting on her front porch and most
importantly, she adored her family.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in
death by her son, Steven West; and an infant grand
son.
Survivors include two daughters, Tracy West
Patrick and Autumn West; fiance, Tim Christian;
one sister, Helen Huff; three grandchildren, Court
ney Adams (Cody), Bellamy Bridges and Avery
Bridges; and two great-grandchildren, Emma Ad
ams and Asher Adams.
Funeral service: Sunday, October 8, 2023, at
4 p.m. at Lord and Stephens, Danielsville.
Family to receive friends: Sunday, October 8,
2023, from 2 until 4 p.m. at the funeral home.
The family will be at 131 Christian Strickland
Road, Comer, Ga. 30629.
