Church News
More than a
This weekend I had the
opportunity to speak on
behalf of my first cousin
Jeffery Davis who made
his heavenly homecoming
Wednesday evening.
When I started to think
back to my first memories
of my cousin the span was
50 plus years. I remember
sitting around the table with
a group of cousins, as one
or another would celebrate
a birthday.
Of course, we also spent
all the holidays together. We
were family. We were knit
together in love, and as the
years went by, I began to re
alize how God truly blessed
me with these people.
Since Jeffery lived near
me, we were able to spend
a lot of time together. He in
stilled in me a great love of
the outdoors.
I remember climbing way
up in a tree only to go limb
to limb to get back to the
ground. I remember jump
ing over the creek and mar
veling at the wildlife that
lived among the trees that
seemed to touch the sky.
I believe you will agree
with me; many times, a
cousin is a best friend, a
cousin is someone that we
can depend on and a cousin
is a con
fidant
and a
good
cousin
is some
one
to be
thank
ful for.
Looking
back on
our re
lationship as kids, I thought
about Ecclesiastes 4:9-10
which says, two are better
than one, because they have
a good reward for their la
bor. For if they fall, one will
lift up his companion.
Yes, we were there for
each other, no matter what
came our way. Jeffery
would grab my hand when
I started to fall down the
creek bank; he steadied me
when I walked along the
tree limb, and he had my
back in every situation.
After all those good
times, we grew up; I moved,
and our lives seemed to take
a separate path. Although,
the memories I had of our
childhood, were some of
my greatest memories. Even
though we went years with
out seeing each other a lot.

cousin to me
cember2022. Jeffery, along
with his parents, agreed to
leave their home when a
company came in with an
offer to buy the entire neigh
borhood in Sugar Hill. You
would never believe where
they found a house. They
bought a house five minutes
from me! Here we go again.
Once again Jeffery and
I were a little more than
a rock’s throw apart. Al
though it was very different
this time around. Jeffery
was sick; in fact, he was so
sick that doctors had given
him a year to live. Although,
we all know the Great Phy
sician has the final say so.
Over the last year, Jeffery
and I were able to spend a
great deal of time together.
I was so thankful Chris was
able to get to know him as
well.
While we didn’t have
an opportunity to enjoy
the great outdoors, we had
long talks and reminisced
about the good ole days.
Not long after they’d moved
in Jeffery lost his dad, and
that opened the door for a
wonderful conversation. We
talked about heaven, and we
both knew that’s where his
dad had taken up residence.
We read Revelations
21:4 which says, ‘He will
wipe every tear from their
eyes. There will be no more
death’[b] or mourning or
crying or pain, for the old
order of things has passed
away.”
That is when I said, “Jef
fery your dad is not sick
anymore. You dad doesn’t
have pain anymore; you dad
is not crying anymore,” and
it seemed to ease his mind.
Last week, I got the news
that Jeffery was heading
towards his heavenly jour
ney. When that happened,
I was sad; I cried, but then
I picked up my Bible and
went back to those words.
“There’s no more sickness,
Jeffery is running down
those streets of gold; He
doesn’t need his glasses to
see the walls of jasper, and
He sees Jesus’ face to face.
Dining the experience I
was reminded of two things.
First, it is most important
that our friends and family
know Jesus Christ as Lord
and Savior, and I was also
comforted because there
will be a great reunion one
day.
