Mumfin'd*• Labor-Saving Machine.
This is the name of what appears to be
a cotton planter and guano distributor,
which we saw yesterday at the store of
that live firm, Holstead A Co. It is the
invention of a Georgia man, and as far
as we are capable of judging, is admira
bly adapted for the uses intended. We
are induced to allude to this article with
a view to enoouraging Southern mechan
ics and Southern ingenuity, and iu the
hope that our people may set thdr inven
tive facnlties to work for the purpose of
inoroasing the number of farm and gar
den implements, whioh have heretofore
been almost entirely imported from other
sections. By the by, it is well worth the
time of planters to drop in at the store
of Holstead A Co. just to take a peep at
the many useful inventions there to be
seen.
River A'etc*.
The rivor is still very low and unless we
have rain in a few days the larger boats
will not be able to reaoh this point. The
Jackson, whioh has been our principal
dependence this season, is expeoted np
to-night. This boat is now commanded
by Capt. Henry Moore, a youth who has
won his way to his present position, by
industry, enorgy and a disposition to
prove himself accommodating to bis em
ployers and the people along the river.
He is now one of onr most popular river
officers, snd we are glad to state stands in
high favor with tha general offioers of the
Central Line.
JTrtghtful Accident.
While in thw interest of our duty the
other night we osme upon a shaft, a few
spokes, a shattered lamp post snd a bad
ly disorganised man, who was graoefully
reclining on his face in the dirt. We
heard him muttering “’Appy New Year”
and were satisfied as to the cause which
produced the result before ue. But fear
ing that we might be mistaken, we asked
him what the matter was. “Only been
makin’ calls. Appy New Year,” and we
left him to speculate on the uncertainty
of human eventa and New Year’s calls.
