OPI MKA. AI.A.t TUESDAY JANUARY 0, 1874. OPELIKA DEPARTMENT. Office of Opelika Department of tho Columbus En- qu her back room of llodgo A Hurt’s Grocery Store, Rail Road stroot. Subscriptions for Daily, Weekly anil Sunday Knqumlh received at this office. Also, con tract for advertising and Job Work of all descriptions At such prices us defy competition. R. M. GRAY, EDITOR. Tlic Outlook lor 1H74 In anything but cheating, present or fu ture. Look which way wa will, no bright prospects iuviio the mind to pleasing con templation of present or future good in Btore for ourselves or the dejected world around us. Can this general gloom, these sad forebodings of tho hard lime here and to come, afllioting a nation of people un usually self-reliant, be tho result of one man’s failuro to meet his money obliga tions? Is it truo that Jny Cooko & Co.'s failuro last full has of itself plunged an entire country and pooplo into financial ruin and embarrassment? We can’t think so. Neither can it be to a partial failure of tho crops, both in food and rai ment, for tboy are large enough to feed clotho and to meet our liabilities in the aggregate, if not in individual cases. Neither can it bo for want of confidence, so much doprocalod by tho press in the inoipioucy of tho pnuic, for wo learn that money is ilowing in its usual chan nels of trade. Cotton haB been and is be ing largely sold, and tho scare is over. There must be something of more weight, of more pwer, than these troubles to seud stagnation and death in trade through out the length and breadth of the laud, and to hold bound and helpless the ener gies of ft people uuequaled on earth for entorpri6o, pluck und vim. We noed more money, cheaper money, to supply tho domands of forty millions of people who have development on the brain, who nro not content to wait an nge to bridge the Atlantic, to disembowel the earth, if by bo doing they can turn an honest ponuy with “John Bull’' or annox a .slice of the Celestial Empire. We neod more money to dovelop the hidden wealth of our hills aul valleys, rendored easy and certain by our fiuished and unfinished railways ; to build up our wasto places, now lying fallow in weeds and briars. Wo need more money to de velop an empire ten times as groat as that of Franco and England ; to vivify and strengthen progress from Cuuada to Mex ico. Ho uuxkms are tho people for a re dundancy, that nine-tenths of us would have welcomed war, ns a moans. IIow much better that Congress should give us the money, and peace with the boon ; and so let us go on to that destiny to which nature invites, and which tho people de mand, in n half century as well as in an ago. Handily was as lovely as nature’s pot child could be, and our pooplo seemed to appreciate the gift, as our churches were uuusually thronged with tho devoutly inclined, day aud night. No Mayor’s Court bas been held lor sevond iluys. Our peo ple who patronize Ilia Honor havo tiod to other parts, or are wisely conducting themselves in the pale of tho law. To tlio lliiMiuc.HN Men of Opelika. Tho proprietor of the Hun and Enqui red, since merging tho former (Sun) in to this paper, oilers unusual facilities for the merchants to tuako their business known to the country immediately tribu tary to this place. Tbo circulation hith erto large, has boon by this arrangement nearly doubled, and up to date no addi tional charge is proposed for advertising. As the agent of this place, wo shall be happy to have your cards, aud will give suoh display to them as shall satisfy ail that they’d lmd their money’s worth. Pay P|>. Poople who aro in debt for supplies furnished liberally by our merchants last year, should come forward and relieve the pressing nocossitios of their frieuds. We hear much complaint in this direction If you can’t pay all pay some, and so far aid in liftiug tho bad time so onerous up on ovory class of industry. Money Easy for cotton transactions. Excliango on New York and Now Orleans buying ^ per cout. oil*. Helling at par. Trade Has not improvod as wo anticipated it would after tho holdnys. Tho prosent woek may do bettor, a general settling down for tho now yoar will have takou place and our status ho hotter defined. In groceries wo quolo as before: Bacon sides 8^ fiour G^all; sugar 12a20; corn l)5a$l; hoy $1 f>0a$l 75; bran llalj, Cotton Continues to arrive slowly.
