Public* School.
Oit Monday next, >vo uro iuformod, our
Public School exercises coinmenoo its
spring session, terminating the third Fri
day iu June. From a circular before us,
we learn that the school will bo divided
into three departments—Primary, Gram
mar and High School—in which the class
ics and higher branches of mathematics
will receive attention.
The terms are very moderate, being for
the Primary Department $200 per quarter
iuudvance; Grammar Department $2 50;
High School $3 00 ; making the cost per
term of nine months from $0 to $0 per
pupil. The pupils will be graded, so that
each one will occupy his or her proper
class for the term ; and if advanced from
one to the other, as their progress may
render necessary, the cost cannot exceed
$9 per term. Prof. McKemie has been
retained as Superintendent, and Mrs.
Htouudenmyor as Principal of the Young
Ladies Department. No selection has yet
been made for the Primary Department,
but we learn authoritatively that on Sat
urday next the Board of Trustees will
meet to examine applications for this very
important position, and no doubt select
such an one ah will control the smaller
children well, and insure their rapid ad
vancement. The school will occupy, as
last term, the Baptist Collego buildings,
which are very well adapted to school pur
poses. Discipline will be, as heretofore,
.rigidly ouforced.
Our people have now the option of sus
taining liberally this enterprise which
has (Carried untold blessings to hundreds
of families iu adjacent cities and will,
with proper countenance and support,
yield fruit as noble and beneficial to us.
Wo desire to draw no invidious compari
sons betvvoen this and other schools
which are before us for support; we feel
& just pride in thorn all, for their mission
is good, and the greatest good which can
be bestowed upon the youth of the land,
and we would not bo understood as an op
ponent of the plan, or any plan of educa
tion which improves the mind und betters
the heart. We feel, however, that the
public, school system is so much cheaper,
uud if properly conducted will confer
•equal good, that we strongly urge parents
and guardians to avail themselves of its
Advantages by sending their children and
wards promptly on Monday next.

His Honor has been busily engaged all
the morning distributing justice to a man
and brother, called Billy Owens. “Billy"

developed l*y freedom ; which, by the

twenty-five flays unless twenty-live round
dollars can be produced from Billy’s pock

rascalities perpetrated on Christmas eve,
for all of which ho may bo called upon to
surrender individual^ rights for two
’months or so. Look out, rogues 1 Mar

—There seems to be a general opinion
in Englaud that Husain will back M. Lev.
sopn in his project of a Central AsiAii
railway. Moreover, if needed, the money
to build such u road can be obtained from
English capitalist**. Russian loans ore
popular in the Londou market. That
county has dealt scrupulously with its
public creditors, and the belief in its finan
cial solvency is firmly established. Now,
then, comes this further question, which
is more perplexing, shall Englaud, as in
vited by M. Loaseps, join the ltussiuu
projectors und complete tho road from
the Central Asiau termiuus to India? The
Russian lino will terminate at Ssmarcand,
iu Toorkistau; tho English extension
would continue from there to Peshawar,
iho conclusion in England appears to bo
that, for the presont at least, they had
better have nothing to do with the project
|*f M. Lesseps. Tho construction of tho
hne would be difficult; its preservation
still more onerous.
