The atmosphere i wan genial and springlike, and the skies .JANUARY 8, 1874. j bright and hopeful. In regard to busi- neRH the signs liave not beon altogether so promising. Cotton receipts have let down almost to one-half the amount re ceived before Christmas; few people, ex cept pluco hunting freedmen, have visited the city, and trade, of course, has beon below expectations. Still our merchants do not yield to depression, but are strug gling manfully to bear up under the dis paragements and discouragements of tho times. During the past two or three days there haH been a slight improvement in all branches of industry, and wo still con tinue to anticipate a good business activi ty for the next five or six weeks. There is a large stock of unsold cotton at this point, considerable quantities in tho neighboring section to bo brought in, while planters undoubtedly have in pock et more money than usual at this soason of tho year. But while all this is true, tho indisposition of people to pay their debts seriously retards financial and commercial operations, and even the most sanguine among us see little in the immediate fu ture to iuspire hope. It Rooms to us that an indispensable requisite to futuro pros perity is the prompt payment of debts due our merchants. If they could collect even one-half of what is duo them, they would bo iu condition to lend assistance to farmers Ilia ensuing season, llut un ions thoso collections uro made the pros pect is rather gloomy for both merchants and planters tho coming year.
