Reports for and against were otferod, published for in formation and tho meeting adjourned to the 15th. —The reports of the sextons of the three cemeteries of Savannah shot/ au aggregate of 1,1U5 interments for the year 1873. Of those, tho largo number 885 were colored persons, leaviug but 3(58 whites. —Eatonton lost nine houses, valued at $10,000, by ihe tire of Tuesday. The following losses are given: J. A. Washington, January 8.—By a vote of 45 to 14 the Senate rejected Pratt's amendment to tho salary bill, compelling metnbeiu to refund back pay received siuce March 3d, 1873. House. The message of the President to tho Senate, withdrawing the nomination of George H. Williams to bo Chief Justice, states that it is done at his own request. Williams remains in office as Attorney General. The uoiniaatiou of Col. Bristow for that position, in auother brief message, was consequently withdrawn. Seuator Gordon on the Grab Rill. Washington, January 8.—During de bate on the Salary Bill in the Senate to day, Gordon, of Georgia, said he was willing to reduce the salary of congress men, but he wanted a reduction made in tho salary of high officials of the army aud navy, lie hoped the salary of the President would be reduced fo twenty- five thousand dollars, as under the old law. He was iu favor of retrenchment, but wanted it made by millions instead of hundreds of dollars. This money should go back to Jhe treasury, and let the re peals mean something—not a mere shad ow to blind the people. Won’t Support Kellovg. Tho Treasury Department announces that the route for the transportation aud exportation of goods iu bond from any port of tho United States by water to Corpus Christi, and thence overland by way of Rio Grande City to Mexico, has been ro-opened. New Orleaun Rattle lu noticed No uotice whatever of tho anniversary of the battle of New Orleans. THE NORTH GEORGIA IE LICIT DISTILLEKIEN. Washington, January 7.—District At torney Farrow, of Georgia, with the en dorsement of all representative men from that State cognizant of the facts, has se cured tho acceptance by the Commission er of Iutorunl Revenue of tho proposition of ex-Represeutative Price in tho matter of illicit distilleriea in North Georgia. The proportion involves u liberal settle ment, approximating to general amnesty for past irregulartios, aud looks to the pardon of those in prison. Tho latter class, however, depend upon Executive clemency. There aro about thirty-five iu jail, and over three hundred cases un adjusted. There are also about three hundred distillers against whom no pro ceedings have been instituted, who de sire to avail themselves of the settlement proposed. THE EDGAR STEWART. Land slides have occurred on the Poughkeepsie & Eastern aud DutcherH A Columbia Railroads. The freshet in the Schuylkill is subsid ing without serious damage. NEW YORK. SHERIFF AND DEPUTY SHERIFF FINED AND IMPRISONED. Action ol' the Workingmen. New York, Jau. 8.— Ex-Sheriff Brennan and Deputy Sharin' Shields were found guilty to-day of contempt iu disobeying the orders of the Court and allowing Henry \V. Genot to escape from custody. Tho Court fined them $250 each, and thirty days in the county jail. The Demands or Workingmen. The proposed mass meeting of unem ployed laborers in New York proved a failure. About three hundred men moved about in groups through Uniou Squaro, but no leader appearing to organize the meeting, and as it was raining at the timo, they soon disappeared. The working men, after leaving Union Square went to Tompkins' Square, where about five or six hundred men hud assem bled. Tho mooting was organized, and resolutions adonted demanding work, en forcement of the eight-hour law, u reduc tion of house rent 25 per cent, and its total suspension till the 1st of May. They then adjourned, with tho under standing that a grand demonstration will take place Tuesday. Extensive preparations were made by police to quell any disturbance, but. their set vices were not required. OUR OWN CITY. THE EAGLE FACTORY-IMPOR TANT NU IT WON. New York, Jau. 8.—In tho suit of the Eagle Manufacturing Company, of Co lumbus Ga., to recover damages for al leged illegal seizure uud sale by Simon Draper of cotton belonging to plaintill, jury to-day in the United States Circuit Court gave a vordict for pluintift. This ver dict probably will decide other suits of a similar character brought against Draper for alleged illegal seizures aud sales of Cotton, while he was acting as govern ment agent. CAUFORNIA. OPPOSITION TO CHINENF. EMI- G RATION. San Francisco, January 8.—The steam ship Chius, from Japan and China, has not yet been heard from. Iu the State Senate to-day, Rouch troduced a concurrent resolution request ing Congress to amend the treaty with Chinn, so as to prevent further Chinese emigration.
