There have been but three coldor morn

at ID, 21 und 22, respootively.
Dastardly.
While a reception party was being hold
at the residence of Freomau Stewart, in
Girard, a night or two ugo, some black-

Our J. P.'s uru not worrying Ihumselveu
uinch over business during this cold
weather. Wo hoard of but one email enso
yeMeid iy, and that did not nuumut to
much. It was an action of trover brought
before Justice Chapptdl by T. J. Slovens
against Mrs. MoKondrce for the rooovory
of a gnu. After evidence and argument,
the case was dismissed on motion of tho
plaintiff, lleeso Crawford for plaintiff ;
T. W. Grimes and W F. Williams, Esqs.,
for defendants.
Seed* Attention.
Warehousemen and luorohnutscomplain
of tho dirty ami muddy condition of the
wharf, by which cottou and merchandise
nro badly soiled, when boat cargoes are
received and discharged. Hnins, floods
and aprings have washed out gullies and
formed puddles, which render tho wharf
anything but a pleasant and attractive
place. Wo hope tho Committoo whose
business it is to look after this matter,
will liavo tho grievance remedied at onco.
Tho whurf is worth to the city some two
thousand dollars pur annum, nud though
this sum is small uoiupared to what it
used to bo iu the days of many steam
boat s, Htill it iN worth looking after. The
city carts and mules in a couple of days
enu till up the waste places nud uiuko
things all “O. K." Let the work bo done.
The Julia St. Clair arrived yesterday
with 503 bales of cottou and 87 barrels,
lhis is the largest number of bales of cot
tou which has been brought up iti one day
by river in four years. On the 18th of
Dooetubor, 1880, the reeeij ts by river
were Got) bales, but wbethtr one boat
brought them all weeauuot say. We are
rather disposed to think two boats arrived
on tint day. Since then about 450 bales
constituted tho heaviest day’s receipts by
river. Of the 508 bales of cottou which
urrived yesterday, 18'.) hales came from
below F.ufnitls. I’liis shows what
wo argued the other day, that tho
pooplo of lower Alabama and Florida are
disposed to patronize Columbus whenever
aho is accessible by river. With uninter
rupted navigation, the trade of our city
could be vastly increased from the region
above indicated.
The Julia leaves this morning.
-Vof Ketchum.
Wo are informed that Prof. Ketchum
was not tho teacher who got the worst of
a “knock down argument" in the colored
public school ou Thursday. It was Wat
son, who is temporarily ruuuiug thocou-
oeru. Ketchum, we hear, is iu Washing
ton, looking after tho little matter of the
Columbus Postoffi e.
Superintendent Dews very properly dis
charged from school the boys who were
eng tged in the assault upon their teacher.
"** think he did exactly right. Suchcou-
duot should not be allowed in our public

School camo oft’ last night at the church.
Though tho woathor was quite cold, a
largo nud olognnt audience was prosunt.
All tho good tilings wo said of tho first
Concert tuny bo said with »till greater pro
priety of this. Tho effort was a groat
improvomonl on tho first—inasmuch as
sovoral now and bonuliful pieces bad boou
inserted iu the programme, and a number
of additional oxuollont singers wore ou
hand to take part.
Wo would liko to montiou tho tiamos of
Homo of tho iiulios, both married atul
single, who sang so sweetly, but four wo
might give off onco to some ovor-sonsitivo
natures.
Tho sovoral solos, duets and trios woro
rendered in excellent stylo ; tho choruses
woro grand aud swelling, and tho musicnl
foast passed off’ delightfully. Mrs. Doida
Hruco performed ndmirably upon tho
organ. Tho singing by tho gontloiuou
was lino. Tho pastor favorod tho nudi
enoo with sovornl good selections. Such
entertainments nro elevating and refining,
aud it would not be n bad idoa to have
them occur uioro frequently at tho
churches alternately.
After tho concert, Rev. Mr. Koudriok
made a brief, but rather amusing talk,
aud took up u oollcotiou, which, we sup
pose, was oroditable, though the preacher
did not soeiu oxaotly satisfied with tho ef
fort. We do not think ho got one-fourth
as much as Mr. Ilnrrett did on tho pre
vious ovening.

Money,
Money is scarce, yet it canuot bo de
nied there is still a great deal of hard
oash hid away in tho houses of mechanics
and farmers. Tho fact bocame evident

T. E. Blaucbard announced to tho people

valed stock of dry goods at cost for cash.
At onco his store bocamo crowded by
Ihoso desiring to take advantage of his
offer, all of whom bocamo couviucod of
tho truth of his publiu statement. Cap
tain Blanchard has wisely determined to
contiuue tho sale of his goods, believing
it will be to tho advantage of himself and

tuor low rutes. Wo can commoud this
sterling establishment and its energetic
