Morions Burglary.
Sawo titiiQ during Wednesday night,
the store house of J. Iv. Green, on North
Kailroad street, was entered from the rear
l,y boring and removing the woather-
boarding, and goods amounting to $150
or $200 worth carried away. From the
character of the articles stolen, we do not
think it will be a difficult thing for Mar
shal Brooks and his wide-awake police to
work up the case ; the missing stock con
sisting of shoes, homespuns, bacon, and
such shelf goods as are usually kept in a
family grocery. Wo trust success may
fallow the effort to unearth this rascality,
and if there be any law in Alabama which
cau be so twisted as to punish these night
larks, we hope to see it measured out
without stint.
Good Start for a Fire.
Last night, between 10 and 11 o’clook,
the alarm was given in the eastern part
of the city, and for a while things looked
much like a fire in a small way. A negro
had carelessly put an ash box (wood) hard
by a building. The wind on some spirit
of mischief, had .worked the embers into
.glowing coals, and directly fiery tongues
were reaching and lapping the dry shin
gles on Granny’s crib. Fortunately help
was at hand, and it was put out.
But a few days since, just about the
early dawn, ft passing negro saw smoke
and flames filling a cook room on north
Kailroad street. Acting promptly the
family were housed, and the fire subdued.
One hour e/ uu t **, and possibly our princi
pal bu8ine/* n §.* k would be a smoulder
ing pile / au d broken bricks to
day. C \imo somebody would
come forward and jronse our people to
the necessity of a protection of some
fcufcd against a destroyer, whose visitations
seem to invito in a spirit of wanton
disregard to public and private interest.
/ City Council
Jlet iu regular session on Monday night
last and transacted an uuusual amount of
business.
Bills to tho amount of four or five hun-
ily/ w dollars wore ordered to bo paid.
* —voral new streets were accepted by
tLd city, and will be opened and worked
as rapidly as finances will allow.
Applications were made by several par
ties for reduction in assessment of prop
erty. Where widows of limited means
were tho applicants, they wore granted.
Preparations were also mado for tho
approaching municipal election in March,
of which wo will give particulars at the
proper time.
Adjourned.
City Fathers.
Tho ides of Muroh will be upon us in a
few short weeks, and it behooves those
who intend entering tho field for munici
pal honor, and who expect to win, to
come to the front. Our columns are
about the best medium to give publicity
to aspirants for office in Opelika or the
oouutry, and we invite your cards at low
rates.
In this connection, we respectfully urge
a union of all private interests and wishes,
and a concentration of all parties upon
such men as shall have a lively and mate
rial interest in the rapid development of
our general interest.
MatterN in Uriel.
—Tho follow who stole our pig last
night and so added to his rations, can
have sleeping apartments gratis if he will
favor ua or Marshal Brooks with his
whereabouts.
—Jackson tells bis ton thousand readers
that Columbus people have re-shingled
a dwelling and Jim Tom Holland's got a
new hat. We know a fellow in Opelika
who has just finished a ten thousand dol
lar house, and wears his old clothes.
—Frank lleeso, associate on the Obser
ver, calls in now and then, and is as com
plimentary as a poor cousin.
—Tho weather continues its mild
schedule. Remember the proverb, “Early
spring, late frost.”
—Travel is increasing upon our rail
roads. Large numbers pass weekly to
the laud beyond tho Father of Waters,
nearly all blacks. A few more such
.vears, and Alabama will be in the hands
°f white men. God speed the day.
‘The little winged god, of whom
Joung pooplo so love to talk and dream,
has ‘Tit,’ and mado things altogether
lovely for two of our young people.
