duo for previous years,
three years Lbu planters huve pitched their
croj s and operated their farms with a [
view to making heavy cotton yields, m
tho hope of gelling out of debt, but in
couM:«|iionoo of unfavorable seasons au«l
tho ravsgos of worms, short crops and
short prices, they flud themselves further !
in di bt thati they were three yeurn ago, and
itti consequently less ability to pay now
than then. Therefore, it is evident (bat
unless the merchants again stand by them,
many of them will bo forced to shun-
don thoir fanning operations, and tho
shunts must inevitably lose hundred'*
of thousands of dollars now past due.
With judicious cropping, fuvoraldo soa-
, and rigid economy tho coming year,
perhaps many of those now ready to aink
may rise to the surface and once more be
enabled to hold thoir heads above water.
Hut while we have thus indicated the duty
of merchants, farmers have also a duty to
perform, nnd that is to coiuo forward, of-
feet tho best settlements they can, and
offer the strongest possible showing for
future promptness. Those two oIuskch
Are mutually dependent upon ea h other,
and it behooves ouch to stand by the oth
er to the farthest extent of ability. We
know our merchants well enough to be
lieve that they will continue to extend
noodful facilities to those who will muke
an honest effort to settle or compromise,
but the farmer, large or small, who shirks
tho line of plain duty, will undoubtedly
have a “hard road to wood ' tho approach-
ing season.
