LADIES’ DEPARTMENT.
VAIHIONM.
Edited by Aoaette, for lk« lusdaj
Enqalrer.
We hear some of onr Terpsicborean
devotees counting the number of days
ere the curtain shall fall before tho Lenten
fast, w.'.en all gayetie* shall end. Menu-
while they will “make hay while tho rmu
•bines" by holding their delightful social
gatherings more frequently. Ladies will
be busy in arranging evening dresses and
fixings for the same. Many ladies have
adopted this winter what is most promi
nent in a dress toilet—what they term
“lingerie." This includes all of tho vari
ous fraises, fiills, ruffs, chemisette, col
larette and fichus, with laces made into
gabota and wrist ruffs. They are shown
iu every conceivable color ami shape.
There is nothing htriUugly new in the
way of dross, except iu color. A new
color has appeared, and will soou become
a favorite, an it contracts bo richly with
black. It is called “ClaTabeUe," which
will be a new uhado of yellow ranging L>
tween the salmon, the bright tint of tho
dandelion or canary, an 1 ecru. It is not
a brownish yellow, nor the greeuish loiuon
we are aocuatoined to, nor yot buff ; but
it will be ureal yulljw, agreeing with both
blonde and bruuotte.
There are many new shades of bluo
talked ot. There is the pigeon blue, the
German blue, the bronze, the eteal and
eeii bluon. Thors are some beautiful new
•hailen of color introduced, nrncthyst.,
pistacho, moselle and sapphire among
others.
PuHQoiuc.nterio is an fuahlouablc as over.
Many of the new wraps aro trimmed wilh
iho new bead passementerie, which »h «f
feotivo and striking in the gas light.
Simple morning skirts for home wear
are very slightly trained. Carriage and
visiting costumes are nil made with trained
skirls; all evening dresses also, though
dancing skirts are not nearly so lorg as
dinner drosses, or those worn at halls by
ladies who do not dance.
Fiolms are much iu favor, and no lush-
ionable young lady’s waidrulie is consid
ered complete now-a-day without half a
dozen diHermit colors.
Brocade silks ato revived, and seveial
very beautiful ones wero displayed at the

This is certainly a now order of things,
and tiuly refreshing. All our lives wo
have toad of helpless women dragging
their husbands down to ruin by their ex
travagant expenditures in dross, thoir
ambition to ontdo their neighbors iu gor-
geously furnished homes, handsome en
tertainments, &c., bat to be found with
entire control of tha purse-strings, and
•peculating with sueli matked success as
to accumulate more wealth than tho hus
band it able to hide, is certainly some
thing new for the sisterhood, and wo
heartily congratulate them.
Do grout men in high placed unblush-

Eve was found possessing brown stone
fronts, or Adutu had stock iu “Credit
