OPELIKA DEPARTMENT.
R. M. GRAY, EDITOR.
I Mcnipbl” and Savannah Railroad.
In company with a dozen or more Co-
! juuibue gentlemen, aud others by the
wav, we took a running look at this great
developer of Eastern and Northeast Ala
bama. We had been onoe before over
tho road as fur as Dadoville, and wero
pleased then with tho solid and perma
nent character of the work. Since then,
undor the vigorous management of Pres
ident Salisbury, and more recently di
rected by tho skill and energy of Major
Alexander, Major Green and an able
corps of employees, rapid progress has
been made, and to-day the whistle of its
locomotives arouse tho echos on the
western shore of the Tallapoosa ; and yet
beyond for fifteen or twenty miles grad
ing is in a forward condition. But for
the panic iron would be on it to-day, per
haps, to Kellyville. We are glad to
learn, however, that the energy of
President Alexander is about to be re
warded by at least a sulliciont quantity to
go as fur as Kelly ville, and perhaps enough
will be secured to go ten or fifteen miles
further; to oil of which we respond amen,
ami shall patiently await the day, which
caunot bo fur distant, when Childorsburg
shall bo reached, and another outlet be
offered our merchants and farmers. Our
interest in this road, Opelika's interest, is
largely involved; a large country, heavily
populated now, and prodatoive of ^every-
thiug sustaining life, building up trade,
aud promoting manufacturing interest,
peopled chiefly by a laboring white popu
lation, to bo largely increased as facilities
opened for communication with a
world hithorto a sealed book to very many
born and raised amid the hills and
valleys of Coosa and Tallapoosa. If wo
shall to direct our efforts as to obtain a
third of ih. t business, it will add a value
to our real property permanent and equal
ing tho hopes of its early friends and pro
jectors. We should bo up and doing ; as
tho road moves on we should move up,
and use all laudable means and neglect no
propor effort to make our businoss and
r abilities to meet the demands of
people changing their business and
searching for a market for the numerous
aud varied productions of a country sec
ond to none in the State, if equalled by
any—when wo consider its liealthf uln^ss
aud climatic advantages, its miueral re
sources, its water power for manufactur
ing purposes, its cotton, its cereals and
fruits. A most wonderful country truly,
aud just such a country, in every
inilo traversed, from this on to
Birmingham. This is a favorite road
of ours, and wo had well nigh forgotten
to sny that our friends on the trip had
proposed for the occasion a bountiful
luncheon, gotten np as only Salisbury,
Chipley aud Blanchard cau do; backed,
however, elegantly by Maj. Green, of the
road, and we finally made up our mind
that it made but little difference whether
wo reached Hotel Turin or Hotel Sioissei,
so long as they were catering. The run
to and from the terminus was rapid, easy,
and just such a one as friend Cline knows
how to get out of a machine. Arriving at
Opelika ut Op. m., Cooper and coffee suf
fered, and our Columbus friends hied
away to their elegant homes, and were
lulled to slumber aud happy dreams by
tho murmor of Chattahoochee’s rushing
waters singing their way to the sea.
DADEVILLE.
Wo did not stop to do Dadeville, as we
YGTy much desired, and since meeting a
dozon or so of its very clever gentlemen
on a rido to the terminus, wo w r ereao much
pleased with tho party, without exception,
that we shall seek an early day to ronew a
short acquaintance.
Tho IIowc truss bridge over the Talla
poosa is a splendid piece of workmanship,
costing about $G0,()00. It looks like it
may do service for a oentury. We would
not have known we were off terra firma,
but for the smoothness with which we gli-
dodjover Tallapoosa’s roaring tide.
Wo wero but a few miles from historic
ground after crossing tho river, the battle
of Ilorse Shoo Bend having occurred just
above, about ton miles from the terminus
of the road, and thou we were on tho
ground rendered famous by tho acts and
doings of Simon Suggs, whose homo is
but a few miles away.
Upon anival, we noticed a few of the
natives, male and female, profoundly in
terested in the movements of the city
folks, ns well as wonder at their surround
ings. Would bo worth the prico of a
dozen show tickets if one could feel as
they must when first beholding the ap
proach of a train.
