Taxable Property of Columbus—increase
vf $8S,US.~» Over Last Tear.
The city Assessors, J. A. Lrudford, C.
A. lvlink aud J. J. Wood, report the tax
able property of Columbus at $0,028,725;
untuxablo property, $447,200—total value
of city $4,07'), 1)2.1.
Last year the assessmonts of taxable
property were $;l, f>.‘>7,440; tin taxable pro
perty, $1.10,400—total value of city
1187,840.
This shows a clear increase during tho
year 18774 of $88,08.1—a gratifying gain,
considering tho oxtruino dullness of the
season.
The uutaxabfo property consists of the
churches, public buildings, and couuty
and State values of all dobcl’iptions.
Otuy License* /b»• the \ ear.
Tims far this season 00 oue-liorse
press licenses huve been granted—ten for
a year, tho rest for Hix months—amount
ing in all to $4.10. Throe 2-liorse drays,
footing up $00. Thirty 2-horse drays—
two for a year—at $00, the rest for s
months—tho whole adding up $4*0.
The total, if all woro taken out for
year, would umount to $1,800. Last year
the total dray license amounted to $2,242
—making tho decrease this year from the
last Of $1*80, even if all wore to take out
licenses for tho year. As the largo ma
jority have taken licenses for loe« time,
tho difference will be greater. Last yoar
no licenses were accorded for a less time
thau a year ; uow for no less tnue than
six months.

Held Statement of Jiussell County, Ala.,
February I, IS 7-4.
The following is a corroct statement of
tho debt of ltussell couuty :
Registered indebtedness $20,450 D1
Outstanding scrip, with inter
est added. 4,091 00
Total indebtedness $110,547 91
Of tho above amount, $2,207 HI is pay

ten month?, $4,500—total, $4,797 U5.
All of this will be required to pay eurreut
oxpenses up to October 1st, 1874 ; there
fore, a decrease of the debt before that
time is hardly probable, but thero is a
good prospect of the ontire liquidation of
the liebi within the next four or five years

The Fifth Avenue Combination Troupe
present to-night tho drama of “Divorce,”
which had such a run and was so de
servedly popular wlion played In the Fifth
Avenue Theatre in Now York. It is ouo
of tho moat interesting of theatrical rep

the renditions of tho company in neigh
boring cities pronounce it first class, aud
universally declare it ono of tho best
which has ever travolod.
Tho Boutberu press give to the troupe
tho highest encomiums. Tho acting, in

the highest praiso. Thoso who would see
a first-class play rendered in a first-class
manner, should bo presout at tho Operu

Every business man is interested iu tho
extinction of tho liquor traffic. $(500,000,-
000 are spout every year in this country
for intoxicating drink. If tho liquor
traffic was supressed, this amount would
he spout for groceries, boots nnd shoes,
provisions, dry goods, oto. Tho suppres
sion of tho traffic would theroforo bo
worth to other merchants tho profits on
$1)00,000,000 a year—say $100,000 O0.
Again, tho liquor trafic reduces the earn
ing power of customers. Messrs. Oliver
Amos A Sons found that they produced 8
per cent, more w ith 1175 men iu tho yoar
of prohibition, than with 400 mou in the
year of license, showing a decrease of
about 15 per cont. in the productive
(rower of each individual, aud tho produc
tive power is the measure of a mans pur
chasing power.
Aguiu, tlioiliquor traffic is constantly
destroying customers. More than half ii
million poiNons die every ton years from
drunkenness, most of them being adults.
Every ono of them is actually worth $800
to the merchants of tho country. Not u
single bonofit accruing from it, offsets this
showing. Lot merchants then vote for its
destruction.—Host on Haiti/ Netes.
tual observation. This truth will be soon
made manifest by anybody who will take
the trouble to stop at tho store of Joseph
A Hro. It will be seen at onco that the
advertisement does not convoy the faint-
eht idea of the sacrifice they are making
in dry goods of every description. The
truth cannot be contradicted that they are
selling goods to-day cheaper than they can
bo bought for in New York, and lower iu
some cases than the cost of manufacture.
Retail dealers should avail themselves of
this fact as well as general consumers.
They are always ready to prove the above.
