Losing at farming.
We hear of a farmer who raised . r »00
bales of cotton last season and lost $10,-
000 by the operation. No corn was on his
plantation. Disastrous seasons was an
other cause.
A farmer in Southwestern Georgia,
whose crop amounted to 1,100 bales of
cotton and plenty of corn, lost $6,000.
The latter was due to storms, which
bent out and destroyed several hundred
balos by a hurricane of wind and rain,
and a few by fire. Had it not been for
these, he would have made a large income
from farming operations.

What Our Fnrtorlfli Do.
Hiuoe August 81st, the Colnmbns facto
ries have taken 0,002 bales of cotton,
against 2,646 last season during same
time; showing an increase of 1,256.
these 8,002 bales had been sold in this
market at present prices, th«y would have
brought $70 per bale, or a total of $273,-
140. They, however, were passed through
our factories, converted into yarns and
cloths, and their value trebled, making
them worth $810,420, leaving a net gain
to Colnmbns of $546,280. All this money
is ret lined in our section. Our mannfuo-

shots were fired across the room, three
taking effeot in Clayton—one tbrongh the

will prove fatal. Sims was shot in the

Old Recollections of Columbus.
Owing to the press of matter we are
compelled to omit to-day our recollections
of the former days of Columbus. From
1840 the iuterest increases and hot polit
ical contests, and shortly after the moot,
ing of our railroad and fire depart merit
interests oommenoed. Of all of those
we propose to give a history, which will
be published in onr Suudsy paper. SpHce
was required for more interesting matter
to-day. We are not much of an admirer
of the past, only as it affords lessons for
the future. Hence wo desire to give
more than a mere abstract. The chronol
ogy of events will be continued in our
next Sunday paper.
County Court — The Xew Judge and
Solicitor.
Our speoial dispatches of yesterday an
nounce that Captain J. F. Pon has been
appointed Judge, and Reese Crawford
Solicitor of Musoogee County Court, iu

confirmation by the Senate there cau be
no doubt. The former officers have nevor

to assure tbe public that this was an over
sight, uml while doing so we can heartily
commend the splendid establishment of
this gentleman, as it is one of whioh our
citizens may well bo proud. Iu addition
to his drug and chemical business, Doctor
Brooks keeps constantly on haud tho finest

In tbe same issue we overlooked tbe
card of Mr. J. A. L Lee, of Upatoi, Mus

farmers, as he offers two young bulls at a
lower price than they can be bought for

About April 6th we propose to issue an

Savannah A Memphis Railroad
Office Created.
At the meeting of the Directors of tho
Savannah and Memphis Railroad Com
pany^ yesterday, in Opelika, nothing was
done save the usual routine business.
The office of Vice-President was creat
ed, and Col. W. L. Salisbury, of Colum
bus, was elected to that position. This
^adds great strength to the organization.
Col. 8. was for a few mouths President of
the Company, and did more railroad work
given time, and oonstruoted more
road, than any railroad officer iu the land.
He whh earnestly requested to retain his
post, but peremptorily resigned after he
had finished the particular work he un
dertook.
From directors wo learn thcro is an
immediate prospeot of obtaining Home
eighteen more miles of iron, which will
complete the road some sixty miles from
Opelika, and lack only twenty-three miles
of reaohing Childersburg, on the Selma,
Rome & Dalton Railroad.
Tbe prospects of this road, in which
Columbus is so vitally interested, is most
oheering. When completed to Corinth,
it will traverse the richest mineral region
in the world, and the Western terminus
will bo looated at Columbus.
Especially for ye Dancers of ye German.
