$5 for attempting to creep into a colored
womun’ room.

with cutting a negro’s throat. lie did his
work benignly, and only inflicted a slight
wound. Tho wounded man declines to

Alarm of Cl re.
A house occupied by negroes on tho
streos next to tho jail, between Crawford
and Thomas, caught fire last afternoon at
six o'clock. A general alarm was not
given, only a partial one from the S. W.
depot. A feather bed was burned. No
other damage. Enginos not out.
Another alarm was given last night
about eight o’clock. It proved to bo false;
or at least produced no damage.
Ha in and tho Churches.
Good raiu was falling almost tho whole
of Sunday afternoon and night. In con-
sequonce, the churches, only a few of
which were oponod, were very thinly at
tended, both in tho morning and at night.
If a party had boon givon, and it had
boon any other night, the attendance, it
is assured, would not have boon largely
interrupted by falling showers. Proba
bly this apathy to being present at divine
worship on Sunday may account for tho
fact that the salaries of the pastors at two
of the Methodist churches in tho city have
boon reduced several hundred dollars.
Wo have an able ministry, and wo dislike
much to kgo this falling oil' iu amount*
paid them.
IV Herman.
The rooms were crowded last evening.
Beauty danced before tho eye iu bewild
ering profusion, and to merry strains of
music, little feot, like mice, beneath
the petticoat, pooped in nud out.
Tho most lovely maidens and hand
somest men were out, and tho hours sped
us noiseless and unheeded as if they trod
on flowers. Elegant married ladies m«t-
ronized the affair. “O, tho charming
German, and tho delightful young moil,
would wo could have them every night !”
we over hoard a beautious young lady
whisper to a lovely companion. Two
bright maidens from Savannah added
greatly to the pleasure of tho evening.

The Orantl Central Hotel, Xetv York.
Hal Jason" writes of a recent visit to
the Grand Central Hotel as follows:
During the winter, without disturbing
tho guests, frosh decorations have been
added in every direction. New designs
in fronOue work have been finished
throughout tbo halls, parlors, principal
atairoascK, grand dining room, and ex-
changea. Standing in tho roar of the
graud exchange, facing Broadway, the
tout ensemble is magnificent—unrivaled
in Europe or America. The lloor spreads
out before you like a lake of marble, au
entire bluok in length and many foot in
width. Above, tho richly frescoed ceil
ing is supported by a dozen or more
carved Corinthian columns, whilo the
massive, suspended chandeliers gleam at
night like n sheen, with the glitter of a
hundred white globes of light. Wander
whore you will, all is iu keeping with
taste and beauty. The Grand Central
is hardly approached in style and appoint
ment by any other hotel in New York,
yet its rates are from one to two dollars
less than other first class hotel, being
$3.00, $3..10 and $4.00 por day. Mr.
Powers, its proprietor, seems to have
solved perfectly, for the public, the prob
lem of moderato rates aud luxurious sur
roundings.

Yon may read about a man or a place
for a year, but you oan get no idea of
either compared with one-half hour’s ac

made manifest by anybody who will take
tho trouble to stop at the store of Joseph

est idea of the sacrifice they aro making
iu dry goods of every description. The
truth oannot be contradicted that they aro

some oases than the oost of manufacture.
Retail dealers should avail themselves of
this fact as well as general consumers.
