Kcononiy the Word.
Our friends, McLemore <fc Hester (we
take Mao.’s word for Clarley’s assent,
which his word is good) propose, in view
of the panic, want of cash, and dullness
of matters generally and particularly, and
a spooled family to rise, to announce
themselves as candidates for Mayor,
Clerk (Treasurer specially), Marshall and
police, at tho oarnest solicitation of nu
merous citizens who pay no taxes and
never expect to ; promising, if electod,
to sit ns Mayor, fine and put offenders to
work, and watch them while at it, eollect
tho taxes, spend it, and pay no miserable
printer to publish such useless infor
mation. They don’t propose that their
friends who have brought them opt, shall
bo worried about taxes to lock up the
little ragged scamps in public schools,
while they might be loitering and loafing
around apple-stands, and enjoying freo
rides on sloeping-oars, learning the ways
of the world, modern dodges in rascality,
nil for nothing.
“Mack" wants it distinctly understood
that he will undertake the job for soldier’s
pay and perquisites, and pledges himself
as Mayor 1 td “go one eye”—
after tho fashion of other high
judicial functionaries—on the pockets
of offenders to give them the low regard-
loss of testimony or lawyers, ipse dixit.
As for street improvements or conveni
ences, comfort, and other twaddle about
progress, it is bosh, and not to be consid
ered. Mao confidently expects a big rally
of his unwashed friends at and around the
polls on tho lid of March. He has also a
few thousand Confederate premiums to
pay, which ho proposes to loan without
BOimi'ity, m rtgago or liens on cotton seed
or dead umies. In view of tho numerous
aspirants for the Mayor’s and Marshal's
oftieo ho has not a doubt about his suc
cess, and compliments his friends on the
easy victory before them. Wanted—a
good saddle horse, and a new pipo.
Harried.
Yesterday, at 4 p. M.,at tho residence of
Dr. R. I. Thornton, Tuskogee, Ala., by
Rev. Air. John Motley, Miss A. L. Thorn
ton, to Mr. Dan T. Hudrnon, of this city.
Dan has heretofore been our model of
a happy, self-satisfied man. But, alas I
for human jmlgmont, it seoms we were
in error, and one thing was lacking to fill
to overflowing—his golden goblet of con
tent. Having now secured that, we are
ready to back our judgment on his per
fection of earthly bliss.
Heavy Uamanci.
On yesterday, tbo trial of a case for
damages laid at $25,000 was commenced
in our City Court ngainst tho Alemphis &
Savannah Railroad by the administrators
of a Air. Shearer, who was accidentally
run over nml killed by a switch train lost
summor. Some iutorest is being excited
in the result. Colonel Barnes & Son for
defendant; Hooper A Sons for plaintiff.

—Municipal politics waxes warm; some

out. Who'll bo the martyr ?
—Wo distribute a large number of tho

first chapters of a now story by the author
of “Louis Alacon,” which will commence
in the Enquiber of the 28th of February.

—Col. Calhoun’s article in Thursday's
Enquirer—“This Alurderer”—produced a
marked impression here. We hope it
may do good ; we believe it will.
—Oats are still being liberally sown
throughout the county.
